Why now? Players react to Woods’ plans (Ernie Els & others displeased)

MARANA, Ariz. – Tiger Woods isn’t playing the WGC-Accenture Match Play, a tournament he has won three times, but his presence is being felt here.

Like a dark cloud in Arizona sunlight.

In mid-December, Accenture dropped Woods as a commercial spokesman. Wednesday, the Woods camp dropped this little diversionary bombshell on the first day of Accenture’s PGA Tour event: Woods will be seen and heard Friday for the first time since his sex scandal began unfolding at Thanksgiving and led to his indefinite leave from golf.

Woods will appear in an ultra-controlled setting, in line with his modus operandi of so many years. He will speak to a “small group of friends, colleagues and close associates” and discuss his past and future and apologize at an 11 a.m. (EST) televised gathering at the TPC Sawgrass clubhouse in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., according to a notice from his IMG agent, Mark Steinberg.

Just my opinion but I think he has a more legitament beef than talking about Tiger’s love life.

Hey Woods, you’ve already PROVED the fact that you’re a bum! So make your announcement some other time!

Ernie’s not looking at it from the right perspective. For Tiger Friday is a great day to have his announcement because most people don’t follow news stories (even gossipy ones) through the weekend, so the story will die. If he has his announcement on Monday it’ll be the talk of sports news all week.

Ok, i personally feel that Americans are quicker to forgive a Celeb for almost anything. Before they would a family member, who may have committed the same offense. Well you can count me as as one of those who say, “ Just go into rehab and they will forgive you anything “ type folks. I’m no longer that forgiving. These Celebs have the money & power to do anything their little hearts desire. And they do. So let him eat cake.

The timing of this public statement in a setting that he controls further makes the case that Tiger Woods is a sociopath.

Woods must have been soaking up the lions-share of the endorsement dollars on the PGA. With his personal life on the skids those dollars may move to other golfers. You hafta figure Els & others may be rooting against Woods just a little.

"The timing of this public statement in a setting that he controls further makes the case that Tiger Woods is a sociopath."

That's precisely the way I see it. It's about him, only him and always him.

"Woods must have been soaking up the lions-share of the endorsement dollars on the PGA."

I'm not entirely discounting the possibility of some resentment at play - although, I can't say Els really seems the type. But to play contrarian, I'll point out that endorsements for other players didn't shrink with Woods, they actually increased, even when removing Woods' number from the equation.

I read last summer - before the scandal - that not only was Tiger number one in total sports endorsements, but Phil Mickelson was number three, only being bested by LeBron James. It was a story that ran in the Cleavland Plain Dealer about James. I was a little shocked that Mickelson did so well.

The people that worship woods’ butt are probably card carrying viewers of Am Idol. Golf should have the same crowds and tennis or hockey. Let em yell. And woods would be gone.

If I recall correctly, Ernie Els knew Elin long before introducing her to Tiger. It’s not accidental that they quoted him; I think Els expected better from Tiger.

I don’t think it was Ernie. It was Jasper Parnivek (sp)

I live down the road from where he is now and this is pathetic

he’s a golfer and to hear the media and FOX talk about this you would think that he is the second coming

now they have a shrink on about this

of all the things going on in the world and we have this women on fox talking about this like she’s just won a million

he’s a golfer get a grip and lets focus on more pressing issues than talking about a dopey cheating golfer who made billions by hitting a ball into a hole

I live down the road from where he is right now and swear no one around here gives a crap about him.

just another dopey celeb golfer who got caught cheating but to hear some talk about this you would think he was the best thing in the world.

FOX has been covering this for over 10 mins now, so I guess that the dopey woman on FOX thinks that Iran, spending, health care, nukes, Binladen are not that important because tiger is going to talk

bno wonder this country is in a mess , we have far too many dopes who love celebs

I quite agree. Do tell what Woods’ “mea culpa” is all about as I’m office-bound.

Listened to a few minutes of it and turned it off. He pulled a Bill Clinton saying his affairs and whether he will remained married are between him and his wife. And the media should let them be.

Hey Tiger, I've got news for you. If you had kept it in your pants, none of this would be happening! YOU brought this on to your family. Not the media.

He's even more of an ass now.

I also found his tone quite offensive. It was accusatory in its nature toward the media.

It's YOUR FAULT, Tiger!
