Why now? Players react to Woods’ plans (Ernie Els & others displeased)

MARANA, Ariz. – Tiger Woods isn’t playing the WGC-Accenture Match Play, a tournament he has won three times, but his presence is being felt here.

Like a dark cloud in Arizona sunlight.

In mid-December, Accenture dropped Woods as a commercial spokesman. Wednesday, the Woods camp dropped this little diversionary bombshell on the first day of Accenture’s PGA Tour event: Woods will be seen and heard Friday for the first time since his sex scandal began unfolding at Thanksgiving and led to his indefinite leave from golf.

Woods will appear in an ultra-controlled setting, in line with his modus operandi of so many years. He will speak to a “small group of friends, colleagues and close associates” and discuss his past and future and apologize at an 11 a.m. (EST) televised gathering at the TPC Sawgrass clubhouse in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., according to a notice from his IMG agent, Mark Steinberg.

From the story...

"“It’s selfish,” said Ernie Els, mincing no words. “You can write that. I feel sorry for the sponsor. Mondays are a good day to make statements, not Friday. This takes a lot away from the golf tournament.”

Ernie telling it like it is. Clearly, Tiger's his same old self.

Calculated. All of it. Trying to get the apology out so the Woods’ buzz can get off the ground and get him back on the tournament.

Since Tiger wins about half of the tournies he enters, his opponents are all too happy to have him sit aside or be well distracted.

Wow, that’s savy business sense. Hire me as your spokesperson and I’ll stick it to you as soon as the relationship runs it’s course.

What an excellent plan to pick up new sponsors. He should fire his agent/manager.

Tiger Woods is a good golfer, but he is also just about as sleazy a husband and father as I have ever seen exposed. His wife might have forgiven a one woman affair, but 14, including knocking up a porn star twice. What a family man.

Of course this was probably Tiger’s own call. He’s wounded and lashing out wherever he can get a shot in.

"What an excellent plan to pick up new sponsors"

Good point. I'm sure this isn't lost of possible future sponsors.

Tiger may be the best golfer that's ever lived, but he doesn't have a tenth of the business acumen of a Greg Norman or Jack Nicklaus. Yep, Tiger filthy rich. But virtually all that money comes from him putting his own name on other people's products. Nicklaus and Norman and Palmer have all created successful companies.

Why didn't Ernie stand up then?

"Why didn't Ernie stand up then? "

I suppose Ernie would say because what he may (or may not have) known then was private - between Tiger and his wife - probably purely speculative and none of Ernie's business. But, this is quite different. Ernie is commenting on Tiger very public actions; Making a statement on the Friday of a high-profile golf tournament, a World Golf event.

There's protocol for these kinds of laundry-airing statements on tour; Always scheduled for the Monday following the tournament, not during Friday's play.

Good point.

The people on tour and the golf media had to have heard whispers. Some may have known. None of them said a word. I don’t want to hear from any of them now. Tiger wasn’t the only one damaged in this. People who benefited from his presence on tour so they kept quiet are culpable as well.

It’s about business. Tiger shouldn’t make the announcement because it might affect business this weekend, but people kept their traps shut about his life because it might have affected their business (those huge purses he brought to the sport).

In fairness I don’t know if Ernie had the slightest bit of knowledge. But anyone who did should just shut up now.

"None of them said a word."

What would you have had him say....

"I have heard rumors from a friend's cousin's sister's babysitter, that Tiger Woods is banging hookers and whores. Thanks for your time"

Ernie Els

It's a little ridiculous, don't you think?

I just hope that ReHab didn’t mess up his golf game. I could care less what he does in his spare time. I watch him because he’s the best golfer ever. Its not like he’s working out the school cirriculae or something, now that would cause me to get upset! (careful ... /s).

I don't pretend to have any real inside scoop, but I do golf from time to time with a guy who's a caddy on the Sr. Tour (and part-time on the regular) for a pretty well-known Pro. He swears to me that he, nor his guy, had ANY idea. It was a complete shock to him. He said that Tiger keeps entirely to himself and really has no friends on tour. In fact, he said that Tiger's wife never hangs with the other wives, either.

Some may have known, but I think it was a shock to many more than it wasn't.
