Superbowl Ad Thread
Super Bowl | 2/8/2010 | Me

Posted on 02/08/2010 10:31:51 AM PST by catnipman

Well, I guess I'm finally forced to admit it. I'm officially "over the hill". I simply didn't "get" most of the Super Bowl ads. Most simply didn't make any sense what so ever to me. When I did figure a couple out, I couldn't figure out what they were advertising. And when I figured out what they were advertising, I didn't know what it was, what it did, why I needed one, and what I would do with it if I got one.

And then there seemed to be lots of ads with guys taking their clothes off for no particular reason. And not cheesecake guys, either. Just guy guys. Plain ol' office worker type guys half-naked. Also, some of the half-naked office worker guys seemed to be cavorting in hay fields for unfathomable reasons.

On the other hand, the guys that did have clothes on all seemed to be young clueless wimpy guys doing strange clueless wimpy things, and presumably if they would only buy some kind of wimpy male product like Dove something or other, then they they would be less wimpy, maybe.

Also, there were lots of guys doing really odd things to get beer. Everything except going to the store to buy some. Me? I always get my beer by getting in the car, driving to the store, and paying money to the beer store guy. I mean, that's the way my daddy taught me to get beer. Who knows? Maybe Pop was all wrong about how to get beer, and I'm crippled for life with faulty beer-getting skills.

At any rate, I was wondering if it was really just me, or did most of the Super Bowl ads seem mostly pointless, stupid and/or unfathomable?

(Disclaimer: I’m the kind of guy who thinks a real man owns a pickup truck, a 24 foot extension ladder, a chain saw, and an air compressor, though also owning at least one legal machine gun doesn’t hurt.)

They WERE all pointless and stupid. Waste of time.

The rest were either men-as-wimps, boring, or pointless ....

>>The only one I like was the Snickers commercial with Betty White and Abe Vigoda playing football. <<

Forgot that one — definitely add to the “good” list.

There was that big hoopla about some gay dating site wanting to run an ad, but after watching the Careerbuilder ad with people in their underwear and the Dockers ad with men singing about not wearing pants, I have to wonder just how much worse the dating site ad could have been?

I liked the Betty White/Abe Vigoda ad, too.

I had the same reaction. There were ads I have no idea why they were on. Between the inane adverstisements and the football game that looked like a basketball game I was extremely happy when Peyton threw the interception so I could go to bed. The whole thing annoyed the hell out of me and I’m a guy that loves football. The combo of inanity of ads and the throwing show was tedious. Next time lets get two football teams to play the super bowl.

The Letterman show ad with him, Oprah, and Leno was pretty good. And I did like the one with Brett Farve as the 2020 Superbowl MVP wondering if it was time to retire.

Outside of the Tim Tebow ad (along with his mother), I agree totally with you. In fact I hit the mute key for the pregame show, the warbling talentless fat ass queen latifa (WTH is with her fat face on SuperBowl), most of the commercials, the half-time other than to see the WHO....(geez, I remember watching them on Woodstock movie when I was 15 yrs old....did those guys look old or not?), and especially the nauseating post-game wrap up. The game itself was average ok.

And as you indicated, a bunch of stupid, dumbed down, idiotic, commercials....and someone is paying advertising agencies millions of dollars for this inane, nonsensical crap?

I remember a beginning scene from City Slickers when Billy Cyrstal's radio station manager rebuked Billy for some stupid commercial by saying "It's stupid & it makes people want to turn the radio off.....my god, we used to laugh at crap like that".

That's how I felt about the few commercials that I did see (other than Tim Tebow's commercial that was positive & refreshing).

Even after I saw him in the commercial, if I had known it was him, I might have thought so.

I disliked her “version” of America the Beautiful. She disrespected that song.

The Letterman ad was hillarious. Best of the bunch by a longshot.
The Tebow ad was brilliant, but would have been pointless without the publicity.

The rest were garbage. I was hoping for better from the “E-Trade” baby. Good thing the football game was entertaining. :)

"animals freeze reacting to Car ads?"

Those were based on a pretty widespread internet meme from a few years back. Some Japanese show had a prairie dog and he did the funny spin-around thing. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sochd9Xqlos)

Soon after, all sorts of funny spin-offs and parodies began appearing on youtube and the such. I got a kick out of them.

I’ll take that back.

The Google ad was good. Not funny, but effective.

Cool! I thought the dog collar commercial was about the best one of all.

I think the idea of a [c]hild slapping an adult under any circumstance isn’t funny.

I agree. That is the one bone-to-pick I have with the CBS show, NCIS. It irritates me when they head-slap on the program, and I certaintly didn't care for their head-slaps commercial.

It is astonishing that the best ad for SB44 - in the year 2010 for gosh sakes - starred Betty White.
