January 26th, 1940

UNITED KINGDOM: British officials acknowledge that of a total of 734,883 children reported to have been evacuated from London since the beginning of the war, 316,192 have returned to their homes by January 8th. (Jack McKillop)

Corvette HMS Marigold laid down. (Dave Shirlaw)

SS Durham Castle struck a mine laid by U-57 on 22 January off Cromarty and sank. The ship was in tow for Scapa Flow for use as an accommodation ship. (Dave Shirlaw)

FRANCE: Paul Ferdonnet, the “Radio Traitor,” a German sympathizer broadcasting in French from Stuttgart, Germany, is tried in absentia by a French military tribunal. (Jack McKillop)

GERMANY: U-331 laid down. (Dave Shirlaw)

POLAND: Jews are forbidden by the German authorities to travel on the public railways.

Western POLAND: The resettlement of ethnic Germans from Wohlhynien (western Ukraine) and eastern Galicia into the territories of the Reich, agreed during negotiations with the USSR, has been completed. The “migrants” come from what used to be eastern Poland, which has been under Soviet occupation since September. The resettlement has been pushed on with all haste since 20 December, with ethnic German groups covering 40 miles a day in temperatures as low as -40 degrees Fahrenheit. German-Soviet agreements late last year mean that some 205,000 ethnic Germans can leave the Soviet “sphere of interest” for the Reich. Many are earmarked by the Reich’s Agency for the Organisation of Space to displace Poles in the General Government area (occupied western Poland), regarded by the Nazis as part of the Reich’s new Lebensraum. Just over 100,000 families from southern Germany are also expected to resettle in the occupation zone.

LINE ISLANDS: The minesweeper USS Quail (AM-15) arrives at Palmyra Island with the first construction party to begin building a naval air station there. (Jack McKillop)

U.S.A.: The motion picture “The Fighting 69th” is released. Directed by William Keighley, this war movie about the 165th Infantry Regiment (former New York 69th Regiment) in World War I stars James Cagney, Pat O’Brien, George Brent, Jeffrey Lynn, Alan Hale, Frank McHugh and Dennis Morgan. (Jack McKillop)

Front page story on Canadian politics - interesting parallels with the current fuss over prorogation.

Yes, well Harper has prevented the liberal leftists from making intelligence gathering and "enhanced interrogation" an issue so that Canada can still act in Afghanistan to continue to protect the West through gatering rendition based intel.

The left is trying to pull a bull shite move that will further ham string our men and women serving abroad. They do not want the war to contnue simply because they are ideologically opposed to the liberation of Afghanistan, as they were to the liberation of Iraq.

Harper is a hero IMHO, beciuase he is standing up against Obama, The United Nations, and the entire wool gathering A$$ hats in the NDP and liberal parties of Canada in order to maintain a protectibve flow of timely intel. Obama is treating terrorists as criminals, a TRAVESTY.And that policy is doomed to kill many innocents by preventing the gathering of intel as Obama intended.Canada would be crazy to do the same. Harpers move is slick and necessary.

Now McKenzie King and his fools were treating the war efffort as a recreational endeavor. The conservatives in Canada knew that the leftist, anti British forces in Canada would try to diminish Canada's role in the war.King took the heat and deservedly so.Again the liberals chose not to fight for freedom, just as they do now in seeking to make "rendition: an issue. It should not be an issue, simply because we are at war, it saves lives, and it is effective, AND IT IS NOT TORTURE

That effectiveness is why the enemy wants rendition ended.

That makes the left in Canada stone cold traitors. Their leaders should be charged under the War Measures Act.

This on McKenzie, one of the liberal admirers of Hitler, along with liberal Joe Kennedy:

"Also during 1937, King visited Germany and met with Adolf Hitler, becoming the first and only North American head of government to meet with Hitler. King commented in his journal that "he is really one who truly loves his fellow-men, and his country, and would make any sacrifice for their good".[20] He forecast that "the world will yet come to see a very great man – mystic in Hitler.

Leftists love tyranny and abhor freedom of the individual. It has always been thus, and it is the same in Canada now.

Harper should be cheered. If not, then Canadians are being fed the long dong by the left.

King suck holed tyrants. Harper defies them.

Alway had a special affection for Jeffrey Lynn's character:

How does that go?

"I think that I shall never see
a sight as lovely as the Free
Republic's angry words when burst
against the liberals' latest worst."

Something like that... ;-)

Don't forget George Brent's character - "Wild Bill" Donovan. I always thought of him as a founder of OSS. I didn't know until today that he first achieved fame as a Medal of Honor recipient for heroism displayed in WWI. Probably also for whipping Jimmy Cagney into shape.
