Here is a video report on TripAdvisor's survey that lists the "Ten Dirtiest Hotels in America." The report goes on the road to visit some of those hotels. An expert took a UV light and a meter that measured bacteria.
They then talked to a TripAdvisor expert about what to look for when you are in a hotel room to find evidence if there are "bedbugs" in the bed.
The video does not list the dirtiest hotels, but here is the link to the TripAdvisor list.

Two of the ten dirtiest in the NATION are in Virginia Beach. Why am I not surprised?
Don’t forget the HI-Express in Ringgold, Georgia.
I avoid hotels at all cost....
we had gotten rid of bed bugs in America, for the most part.
then we started to give carte blanche to the middle east for immigration. Bingo...they brought their lice with them.
Disgusting.
I hate sleeping in hotel beds but when I have to I take my own silk pillowcase and a silk sleep sack and I carry slipper socks as I don’t want my bare feet touching the carpet or floor. I originally bought the sleep sack for a trip to Europe but now I carry it everywhere in the USA too. Can never be too careful with germs. Eeeew.
I can’t believe Hotel Carter isn’t on the list.
I look at it as calisthenics for my immune system.
Never heard of a sleep sack but I’m going to find one!
LOL, my momma always said: “A bored immune system is a dangerous immune system.”
The worst hotel I ever stayed in was in Windsor, Ontario. Looked like the room where they found the mummy looking guy tied to the bed in the movie “Seven”. Super dirty, super creepy.
If you have ever lived in Brooklyn, you know...
Pull the bottom sheet of the bed and pull back the piping along the edge of the mattress. If there are bedbugs, you will see them there. If you find them, demand, at a minimum, a different room. There is no way to protect yourself against bedbugs if the bed is infested.
Better still to get your money back and go elsewhere. If one room is infested, there is a fair chance most of the rooms are infested. The bedbug is a nasty little critter, and very persistant. If a hotel is tolerating an infestation in one room, they probably tolerate an infestation in every room.
I know this list is a sham because the Town and Country Motel located on the old Bossier strip in Bossier City, LA isn’t on the list.
Naw I lived in the Bronx for 14 years....not one bed bug.
ANd don’t forget the Clorox wipes (for doorknobs, TV remote and phone) and lysol spray (for everywhere in bathroom). I wear flip flops in the shower, too. And I ALWaYS pull off the disgustingly dirty bedspread the moment I enter the room. I bring my own pillow and throw - my daughter has a sleep sack - she’s as bad as I am!!
they may launder the sheets everytime but they don't launder the bed spreads....
I had them when I first moved in.
Then I decided that it was them or me, and I eradicated them. It wasn’t easy, though.
I still have the pencil-post bed I built, expecially for that apartment. Each of the legs comes down to a point, about 1” in diameter, and each leg sat in a little dish, where I put the boric acid powder. I used the same stuff to great behind the quarter-round moldings on the baseboards and around all of the light switches, electrical outlets and plumbing escutcheons.
Then I cleaned every surface of that apartment with hot soapy water treated with bleach, got rid of my trashy carpeting, furniture, bedding and everything, sealed the floors, painted the walls, and brought in new furniture and bedding.
I never had bedbugs again. But getting rid of them that first time was a major undertaking! And I checked that mattress each week when I washed the sheets, to make sure they stayed gone.
Sounds good. To accomodate a blanket in your suitcase, you must check your luggage in all the time.
I carry on my stuff. I have been screwed over with lost bags enough over the years. I do not trust the airlines to ensure my stuff is
One of those sleeping bags sounds practical to me.
