I was just sitting at my computer and my antivirus software warned me that an attamp to attack my computer had been blocked. When I clicked on details, the offending source was homelandsecurity.com.

Just weird.

Certainly a look-alike site, in that actual government agencies all end in “.gov”.

Unless, of course, the tinfoil-hat people would insist that that is only what they want you to think... :)

Are you behind a NAT router? Was this a blocked attempt to connect to your computer? If so then it would have been a software firewall that you’re talking about? Additionally, if you’re not behind a NAT router, and you have a software firewall warning you about all incoming connection attempts, you’d be getting hundreds of such notices a day just from IBR. (Internet Background Radiation)

Or is this a program that tried to execute on your computer?

When I keyed the website into my http://, it tried to download a virus....which was stopped immediately. When I did a search for homelandsecurity.com and got the results, I clicked on the link, and it took me to the actual Homeland Security website. Seems strange since I thought once a domain name had been registered, it could not be reused.

Most government sites are .gov

Be suspicious of any ‘government’ site that is a .com

They seem to be hosted by Earthlink:

C:\>nslookup
Default Server: resolver1.opendns.com
Address: 208.67.222.222

> homelandsecurity.com
Server: resolver1.opendns.com
Address: 208.67.222.222

Non-authoritative answer:
Name: homelandsecurity.com.earthlink.net
Address: 67.215.65.132

If you go to the bottom of the webpage it reads Homeland Security LLC. and on the “About” Page it reads

HomelandSecurity.com is a private homeland security blog and not affiliated with any government agency. Our contributors monitor and archive open source news articles on a variety of topics that are deemed to be of interest to the homeland security community and concerned citizens.

The site also features original articles drawn from our team of contributors which includes first responders, academics, security professionals and informed citizens.

Our goal is to promote homeland security awareness and foster communication amongst a diverse array of stakeholders. If you have any comment or would like to have your analysis considered for publication, please contact us.

Several of our contributors prefer to remain anonymous for privacy and security reasons. Authored articles will always be accompanied by a byline and have included:

M. Powell, Ph.D.

J.P. Sullivan

A. Elkus

So since it is a blog it could be embedded with something like “XP Free Anti Virus or some other embedded garbage”

My computer is always on and attached to the internet. I’ve noticed the hard drive on my single desktop is ALWAYS doing a little “kick” every ten seconds or so. I know that because it is now in my bedroom.

Anybody got any ideas?

I’m thinking of formatting my main hard drive and re-installing xp. I’d have to re-install my software (not that big a deal). I keep all my files on an external 1 terabyte drive

I’ve been hit with Trojans twice in six days. The first one got through and locked up my computer. One of those buy virus software to get rid of the virus they just put on my computer type trojans that locks up your computer. But if you shut it down then when it’s coming back up open your Malwarebites software really quick and hit run scan you can get rid of it.
The second one hit me yesterday but my avg caught it and just gave me the warning and cleaned it.

You were saying ...

Be suspicious of any ‘government’ site that is a .com

But, they don't say they are a government site... :-) They say they are a private site...
