Should Government Regulate Our Eating Habits?

New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg is defending his latest so-called “nanny” initiative — a controversial crackdown on salt — by comparing the simple seasoning to killer asbestos in the classroom. "Salt and asbestos, clearly both are bad for you," Bloomberg said. "Modern medicine thinks you shouldn't be smoking if you want to live longer. Modern medicine thinks you shouldn't be eating salt, or sodium."

Do you think the government should be telling you how much salt you should eat?

Yes. Bloomberg’s right, and lowering salt intake is also going to lower health care costs. 3% (622 votes)

No. This is the most blatant form of government intrusion – what’s next: regulating how much sleep I get? 95% (22,217 votes)

No sure, but less salt can’t hurt. 2% (547 votes)

Undecided <1% (25 votes)

Absolutely!

Just as Obama does in the White House, we all should have 100 buck a pound Kobi beef several times a week.

As a conservative, I have really mixed emotions about this. I hate government intrusion.(I love salt). But in this case, if we are getting 30% of our salt intake from bread, something needs to be done. Was there this much discussion about the fat issue a couple years ago?

How long before they start monitoring BMI and saying that is the same as asbestos?

Now that the gummit has decided it can force you to buy things, how long until they have mandatory Balley’s or Curves’ classes, with you being tossed in prison for non-attendance?

The Framers are rolling their graves. Even Hamilton.

Should Government Regulate Our Eating Habits?

Oh hell yeah!!!
They do such a bang up job with everything else they touch. Besides since 0Dumbo will soon be "paying for our health care" he has a right to tell you what you can put in your mouth.

Grab you ankles it's going to be a long 3 more years.

"Modern medicine thinks you shouldn't be eating salt, or sodium."

Not true. Too little salt in the diet has health risks. You need at least 1500 mgs sodium a day.

"Modern medicine thinks you shouldn't be eating salt, or sodium."

Hmmmmmm. Let's get 100% of the sodium out of our diet. See how that works.

I know it's just loose talk by a mindless politician, but this is an example of why I don't want government bureaucrats to make my decisions for me. They screw things up at least as much I do -- and the difference is: they don't especially care if they make a mistake that messes me up.

Sure, Bloomy. You cut *all* sodium from your diet for 30 days, then get back to me.

Friggen’ idiot. Should people reduce sodium intake in general? Yeah, probably. Does “medical science” really say we shouldn’t eat one of the most biologically critical minerals anymore? Doubtful.

You can do something about it. You can make your own food from scratch with limited salt.

You might like some aspects of conservatism but you are not a conservative. I'd suggest not eating so much bread if is it's a concern. That's what a conservative does.

Yes they should and in order to make sure we are being good little drones they must know what we have eaten. THe most practical way to do this is by examining our scat. I think you get the picture. Sure it is a messy disgusting job but hey nothing should stand in the way of Nanny making sure we got our vitamins for the day.

They give us crap we return the favor.

Bloomberg can't get our guns so he's coming after our salt.

Next: Fragrances.

"Salt and asbestos, clearly both are bad for you," Bloomberg said...

Okay Mr. Bloomberg. I have a proposition for you. It will allow us determine once and for all how "bad" for us each of these things is.

I will volunteer to halt 100% of my asbestos intake if YOU will volunteer to take no more Sodium-Chloride WHATSOEVER into your body.

At the end of 90 days we will each have a thorough physical to determine the relative benefits of our respective lifestyle changes.

What do you say? Is it a deal?

Conservatives have also been known to make there own bread and so as to directly control the amount of salt used when making it.

Of course! Based on the interstate commerce clause, which says the federal government can do anything it wants.

Little by little, drip by drip these pieces of rectal fungus keep piling on more laws to restrict our freedom and WE DO NOTHING!

His comment:”New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg is defending his latest so-called “nanny” initiative — a controversial crackdown on salt — by comparing the simple seasoning to killer asbestos in the classroom.”

Salt is also a preservative that can prevent food spoilage and its associated effect on our health. Asbestos also has SAVE thousands of lives in preventing fires until we developed a better product. The media NEVER points that out.
