Most available hand gun ammunition during "civil unrest". (Vanity)
Self

Posted on 01/09/2010 1:39:54 PM PST by GaltTrader

We are doing our annual review of emergency preparedness supplies and procedures. One possible situation is closure of commercial ammunition sources during a civil unrest situation.

We would appreciate opinions on the most likely and second most likely available hand gun ammo in such a situation.

Where I am umgud is right-.40 S&W is always on the shelf. My policy has been for every time I shoot I buy two boxes. One box I shoot, the other box goes in the closet.

Not to start an argument, but I know better.

If you are pushing a 357/158 upwards of 2200 FPs from a carbine lever gun (30/30 pushes a 150 at the same...), PLEASE let em know what ranges you frequent so I can avoid the hand grenade....

Think it through, your commonality of ammo is a handicap-pick a fighting handgun caliber, and a fighting rifle caliber (plus maybe a 12 ga close in crowd gun), and stow a dozen mags worth of each, maybe a few hundred more in an ammo can, forget the thousands upon thousands that some suggest.

P.S. I'm not talkin about velocity with that .357, I'm talkin energy. That's what really knocks 'em down anyway.

I don't go to any range.

The math:

.357 mag, 158 grain SP, 1825fps (really pushing pressures...) 18 inch carbine:

(158/7000)(1825 squared)/64.32= 1169 ft lb

30/30 150 grain SP 2190fps, 18 inch carbine:

(150/7000)(2190 squared)/64.32= 1598 ft lb

430 ft lbs is 27% more energy in the 30/30....

If it really boils down to preference, be my guest, but don’t think the 357 carbine is in the same league as a true rifle cartridge.

The government ordered 200 million rounds of .40 cal ammo this year from Winchester.

A year or so ago, I probably would have said 38 special ammo would be the easiest thing to get, but it seems to be in short supply most places.

there seems to be a decent supply of 9 mm & 45 acp at the moment.

The steel lip Ruger 10/22 mags are even better.

Emergency preparedness should include using that ammo at a local shooting match.

"...Hey, just what you see pal...."

Hey, that movie was on last night! I happened to walk by the TV, saw it, and immediately went into a fugue state.

In a fashion, Teerminator may be the penultimate survivalist movie of all time.

Any way, my answer: .223 loose, in green ammo boxes: Every household should have at least one full ammo box for every AR in the house.

also, .40 cal for the girls and for CQC. I was at the gun show last week and saw shot shells for my .40 Walther, ostensibly for snakes ans such, however I envision it for "hallway scenarios" wherein I do not want to kill my neighbor with a pass-through round. I do not know about pellet sizes, but the box said every cartridge has approx 100 pellets, which must mean they are grain-of-sand sized.

I totally agree. It is also quite possibly the most powerful pro-life movie ever made.

One "accidental" child ends up saving the entire remainder of the human race after a failed attempt at his murder by an evil super-mind.

Frowning takes 68 muscles.
Smiling takes 6.
Pulling this trigger takes 2.
I'm lazy.

But remember one thing, as has been said before, a pistol is only for shooting your way to your rifle.

And in a "SHTF" situation, there will be plenty of both laying all over the ground.

Well said. Now may be the time to organize neighborhood/local "well regulated militia." Make sure they are prepared, too.
