At the Heart of the Anti-Obama Protests Is the Scared White Man Overwhelmed by Change
By Robert James Taylor
Writing about the wave of anti-President Obama protests by white middle class Americans in recent weeks, conservative commentator Patrick Buchanan attributed what was taking place to the rise of the angry white man. Buchanan is only partially right. What we are actually witnessing is the near lunatic backlash of white conservatives who have been overwhelmed and frightened by change.
Yes, there is definite anger at those anti-health care reform town hall meetings. But if you listen closely to what is being said and how it is being said, you can only conclude that the dominant emotion driving the anti-Obama protests is fear. There is a segment of the American population, mostly white conservatives, who have been overwhelmed and frightened by recent changes in this country.
The first change was the election of an African American man as president of this country who did not get a majority of white votes. Never forget that most whites voted against Barack Obama. The final and most authoritative tallies show that only 43 percent of white voters cast their ballots for Obama. The first Black man became president of the United States because 95 percent of Blacks, 66 percent of Hispanics and 63 percent of Asian Americans voted for him.
This truly scared conservative whites because it confirmed Census Bureau projections that America is increasingly becoming a country that is less and less white and more and more Black, Brown and Yellow.
Secondly, fear is being generated by the apparent failures of some of the centerpieces of conservative ideology. The unstated but deeply held belief that the white man has some inalienable right to rule the rest of the world has been undermined by the war in Iraq: a war against a rag-tag band of insurgents which was supposed to be over in six months but is now nearing its seventh year.
The belief that American free enterprise capitalism is the solution to all problems has been undermined by the banking crisis and the current recession. Indeed, it was the freeing of banks and other financial institutions to do as they please with little or no government regulation that brought about the banking crisis and ushered in the current recession.
Thus, while conservatives may say they fear increasing government involvement in the economy may take away their freedoms, deep inside their superficial brains they know that government is the only institution with the deficit spending power capable of pulling the nation out of the recession. They know this but they fear it. This is why they opposed the Obama stimulus plans and his health care reform plans.
They deeply fear government power but they simultaneously realize it is the only power which can solve the most critical problems currently facing the nation. And what scares them most is that a lot of that power now rests in the hands of a Black man with a liberal-to-progressive agenda.
Congresswoman Jackie Speier of California best summarized the growing white conservative fear during a recent interview in which she said, Im just scared and people are justifiably scared because so much has happened so fast in this country. Ive been in office for 16 months and I havent caught my breath yet because its been one issue after another. Its been one failed institution after another.
In other words, white conservatives are witnessing changes they do not control and which they do not fully understand, so they lash out. Obama has simply become the target of all their fears.
Now who are the true racists? ~The people who write about Whitey.
More Alinsky crap btw.
Keep flogging the same meme and name until the opposition owns it.
Sorry, but the only racists I see in the room are Black.
This is deeply irrational. And yes, I am scared by anybody who wants to RULE me. It isn’t the black part, it is the rule part that is scary.
Show me a black journalist and I’ll show you a racist. It all comes down to skin color with this set.
It’s too bad really.
That’s not what I read in The National White News Journal.
And this writer is spouting about things that he doesn’t fully understand.
Namely that Obama’s race has nothing to do with conservatives reactions to him. There’s plenty of reasons to despise him before we get down to skin color. Smug arrogance and a sense of entitlement, socialist and Marxist ideology, possibly Islam, his dislike of Americans, his failure to put America’s interests above those of our enemies. Can I add to the list? Yes I can. If his skin color were an issue, which it isn’t, it would rank about 1,997 out of 1,997

Does that mean that only 5% of blacks and 34% of Hispanics and 37% of Asians aren’t prejudiced against whites?
If we’re going to be PC, shouldn’t that be Latino, not Hispanic? Also, why are the Jewish stats left out?
I would say the author of that article is a racist.
Thomas Sowell/Walter Williams for President/VP!!
Yeah!
Yes, we all crave the African model...please show me where I sign up.
Idiot.
Minor correction. It was published after the ‘coronation,’ in August 2009, after the town hall meetings had begun to attract notice.
The column is so offensive on so many fronts. Shall we begin with the reality that Barack Heussein Obama is an “African American,” but he is not of the ‘black community.’ He has nothing in his past or his family history to connect him to the typical black man in the USA. Not only was he bi-racial (before bi-racial was cool), but both parents were Ph.D.’s, he traveled and was raised in an international setting in his early years, and in a privileged white family with upscale educational opportunities from 11 till maturity.
Obama’s African lineage has no slavery, but rather slave-traders. His living in Indonesia and Hawaii put him in a multi-cultural setting where he didn’t experience racial prejudice first hand. How does that compare with an African-American born and raised in Detroit, New York, Chicago or Birmingham?
The color of Obama’s skin has never moved me one way or the other; its thinness does. The world’s only remaining (for how long?) superpower cannot afford a thin-skinned, inexperienced executive at its helm.
I didn’t vote against Obama. I voted for McCain/Palin. I’d have voted Republican had the Democrat candidate been Hillary Clinton, John Edwards, Kucinich or any of the other Dems. I vote Republican because I believe national security is, or should be, our number one priority. McCain may be a RINO, but I trust absolutely that with him it is truly ‘country first.’ With Obama I don’t believe that is the case.
Further, I believe actual taxpayers who showed up in droves as they began to realize that the ‘change’ Obama is peddling will tax them further, and remove opportunity from them, their businesses and their children. And to what end? To support those who choose not to take responsibility for their own health care? Maybe those ‘angry white men’ are entitled to their anger, as their hard-earned dollars are being sucked up by a giant irresponsible, unaccountable behemoth.
If the author wants to know (tho I doubt he cares) who is going to pay for these programs, he may want to re-watch some clips of the town hall meetings or the tea parties. THAT, the ‘angry white men (and women)’ are who’s footing the bill.
Well, I meant “as in college debate” debate. ;)
Actually, there’s a lot of truth in this. I AM scared of Obama. I’m terrified of the damage this bungling amateur can do to my country. I’m terrified at the hole he’s digging for my children. I’m terrified at the influence he’s robbing from hard-working Americans and giving away to corrupt, hate-filled cronies or foreign interests.
What this author does NOT mention, however, is that ALL those fears are perfectly justified.
How will destroying our economy help the black community? Does this ignoramus think black’s standard of living will stay the same or improve while everyone else is thrown into poverty? That’s where the Hopenchange Man is leading us.
Yes, but what do you really think about Obama?
I like bourbon better than Obammy.
I don’t really think too much of Ozero, ObaMao, Obaloney, etc. I’m sure you get the picture.
