My guess is a video card problem. You might reinstall video drivers.

After you get this fixed, buy a cheap UPS.
Even if it only holds power for 30 seconds, it will save your equipment from the “blips”.

Here is what I would do. POWER THE COMPUTER OFF AND THEN UNPLUG IT. Then check the video cable on the back of the computer and on the back of the monitor. Make sure they are plugged in securely. Then power everything back on.

Usually color problems (everything has an odd tint) are caused by a loose or bad cable. What happens is that with older, analog video connection (not DVI, the older VGA connector), the video is sent as separate Red, Green, and Blue signals. When the cable is loose (or bad), one or more of these signals doesn’t get sent properly. You still see the picture, but the color is off because you’re missing one or more components.

Use this as an excuse to get your wife to allow you to buy a new monitor.

Sounds like a new monitor is going to have to be the fix. Especially if it's and old one. Do you have a second one you can try on that computer temporarily? Good news is that they are relatively inexpensive nowadays.

Either the monitor or the video driver board went bad during the power surge. My bet is on the driver board.

Find a friend or relative that will lend you a monitor temporarily, and plug it into your computer.

If your reds (and yellows and magentas) and come back, you need a new monitor. If the reds are still gone, you need a new video card.

Most computers have the video driver right on the computer motherboard. You can tell this by looking at where you plug in your monitor on the back of your computer. If the active plug is next to the USB, keyboard, and mouse plugs, it's on the motherboard. If the plug is on one of the expansion cards, you have a separate monitor board.

Buy an inexpensive new video card, and install it. Video cards shouldn't cost more than $25, unless you go for a high end graphics processor for gaming.

If
you have lost your colors that usually indicative of a blown CRT.It looks like your in need of a new one.

Get your self a flat screen monitor and you won’t have too worry about that again for quite a while.

I had that happen to my Sony Trinatron monitor.I noticed that all I could get was green and blue, the red color gun inthe monitor blew and that was it.

Electricity went out several times yesterday now the computer has lost many colors. Lost Red and several others.

It's always in the last place you look. ;-)

It's the video card. You'll need to buy a new one.

If your computer “lost red,” it simply means that it is a full-fledged anti-communist.

Celebrate!

If you have an old monitor you can likely save money by getting a flat screen monitor. They use far less electric.

I was gonna make a smart-assed comment about refilling your monitor’s ink cartridges, but...

Glad you got it working!

CRT or LCD?

Which other colors are bad? Do magenta items look blue and yellow items look green? In that case it just isn't displaying any red.

Have you tried your monitor's set up menus? Are they colored properly or not. If they are, it is a computer or cable problem. If they aren't, then it is a monitor problem.

If it is a monitor problem, check the monitor's color temperature/color balance setting. Strange things happen with power spikes and it might have saved a bad value in its memory for the colors it uses and turned red off.

As others have already mentioned, if it is a problem on the computer side, reboot it and reseat both ends of the video cable before yanking out any hardware or reinstalling drivers.
