Breathe easy, Boise State fans.

Texas hit a do-or-die field goal on the final play of the game Saturday night to beat Nebraska in the Big 12 championship game.

The kick likely put Texas in the national championship game and Boise State in the Fiesta Bowl. If Nebraska had won, the Broncos might have gotten snubbed by the Bowl Championship Series.

Yet if Nebraska was a Top Ten team people would be calling it the greatest conference championship game ever. Nebraska is four points away from being a 12-1 team, so it’s not like Texas nearly lost to some crappy team(well offensively Nebraska is)

That’s why I think in lieu of a playoff you randomly draw two teams before the start of the season, to play on two weekends, so basically you force each team to play two non-conference games against good opponents. So if we put that into place, Florida would have the 8 SEC Conference games, the 2 BCS-mandated regular season games, 1 cupcake and their traditional game against FSU.

You can’t get rid entirely of cupcake games because they are big money makers for those smaller schools.

Alabama will run all over Texas.

Gator meat tastes pretty good, and Bama is going to slice and dice the Longhorns.

It’s easy for us to sit back and say Bama should have scheduled a top twenty team in their non conference schedule, but besides the risk of getting beaten, there’s the risk of getting beaten up.

We don't schedule top twenty teams in our non-conference schedule because we always play several top twenty teams in the conference! SEC has TEN...count 'em...TEN teams going to bowls this year.

You don’t schedule top twenty teams in non conference because you don’t want to risk getting beaten, just like everyone else.

That's for sure.

The 2008 Georgia Bulldogs, though they were certainly ranked too high in preseason, had 18 season-ending injuries, mostly among starters.

That's nearly a quarter of their roster, and they can't sign free agents to replace them.

Playing teams as physically talented as the top SEC teams every week, with no opportunities playing weaker opponents to rest starters and get backups some playing time, would be brutal.

Correct, if the player can nab it, it is complete...but if the pass is uncatchable, once it crosses the line it is incomplete. I know the clock stops at the point that the pass is ruled incomplete. In this case, there was clearly a second left on the clock.

Actually...there is.

I have now downloaded the NCAA Football rule book. Here is what it says and it backs up my original assertion:

INCOMPLETE PASS
ARTICLE 7. a.
Any forward pass is incomplete if the ball is out of bounds by rule or if it touches the ground when not firmly controlled by a player. It also is incomplete when a player leaves his feet and receives the pass but first lands on or outside a boundary line, unless his progress has been stopped in the field of play or end zone. (Page 106)

So, if the player does not gain possession of the balland land in bounds as it passes the inbound line, the pass is incomplete by rule....which is what happened with the pass by Texas at the end of the game.

Texas didn’t look like a worthy opponent for Alabama.

Yesterday? Maybe. But in January? Yeah, I think they'll be ready. I'm looking forward to a great game.

I am still in disbelief that Nebraska screwed off the final kick off like that. That is what lost the game. Not anything else.

That, and the extra 15 yards for the horsecollar tackle. That put them in field goal range.

No to mention a dropped pass that was a sure TD.

>> LOL OK. I didn’t mean they are overall unworthy, I really meant based entirely on yesterday’s showing.

Whew! Excellent. I’m glad we cleared that up.

>> I certainly realize it could turn around and go the other way by the time they finally play — in March or is it April?

Yeah, they FINALLY play the 2009 championship is ‘way out in April I think... 2011. :-)

Those are GREAT pictures! Along with your photography talent, you must have some pull at Baylor; clearly you weren’t sitting in the nosebleed section! :-)

>> That was the least exciting one point college game I’ve ever seen in my life. Both teams sucked bad.

They call those “defensive struggles”. Learning to like them is apparently an acquired taste.

(No, I haven’t acquired it yet, either.)
