Texas field goal likely puts Boise State in BCS

Breathe easy, Boise State fans.

Texas hit a do-or-die field goal on the final play of the game Saturday night to beat Nebraska in the Big 12 championship game.

The kick likely put Texas in the national championship game and Boise State in the Fiesta Bowl. If Nebraska had won, the Broncos might have gotten snubbed by the Bowl Championship Series.

Nope...as soon as it crosses the line it should stop, because at that moment it is incomplete.

There is no such rule. I have seen plenty of guys reach OOB to catch a ball while keeping only their feet in bounds.

“Diggity, you better talk with Devere about that—D says that “Cincinnnati beat the strongest 12 game schedule of ANY top team, and they should play Alabama for the national championship.”

And that’s what the BCS computer says. Based on strength of schedule Cincinnati is #1 in the nation. The only reason they rank lower is polls. Big East football just doesn’t get the respect that past bowl game results indicate it should get.

Today, Alabama looked better against their opponent than Texas did against their opponent. I am a highly partisan Texas fan, and I don’t think otherwise. But what about last week, when Texas against their opponent looked better than Alabama did against theirs? What about when Alabama looked like an inept junior high school fan against Tennesee, a FAR inferior team on paper?

I have no problem against the usual “XYZ sux, ABC rules, we’re gonna kick your butt!” partisan “trash talking”. Goodness knows I have done plenty of it myself.

But when you say that undefeated, untied Texas is UNWORTHY to face undefeated, untied Alabama — THAT gets under my skin.

And that’s exactly what you said.

Anyway, I call Bravo Sierra on that claim, FRiend. I think it could go either way.

FRegards

LOL OK. I didn’t mean they are overall unworthy, I really meant based entirely on yesterday’s showing. I appreciate Texas partisanship, especially the first Tuesday in November every four years—and at the Alamo too. And if the Longhorns win the Big Game so be it. I was just talking about one day of play, yesterday. Yesterday, the Tide looked unbeatable—they looked like they coulda blown the Cleveland Browns off the field. I certainly realize it could turn around and go the other way by the time they finally play — in March or is it April?

Who would pay to see these teams in an 8 team playoff... I know I would:

1st round:
Alabama 13-0 vs. Ohio State 10-2
Cinncinati 12-0 vs. Boise State 13-0
TCU 12-0 vs. Florida 12-1
Texas 13-0 vs. Oregon 10-2

I usually try to defend the BCS system (it’s good practice for arguing poltiical issues!) because no one ever does.

That said, your 8-team playoff would be awesome, no doubt.

Huskers should have won the game!

What a great defense they had. If they had just a little offense they would have killed TX. I'm pleased because now I know Bama will walk all over TX for Championship number 13.

Clearly, if I were Alabama, I would take them lightly.....

Not with Coach Saban at the reigns - not ever.

...and give the SEC another title.

THIS is what I like about SEC fans. We're like family. We can mess with each other, but outsiders better not mess with any of us. I'd even root for *gulp* Auburn against anyone outside the SEC. I was pulling hard for the Gators last year to win the Title. Now Roll Damn Tide and bring home number 13 and yet another Title for the SEC.

Tennessee is next on my list after Auburn, but I'd still root for them against Texas or USC.

I talk to guys like you a lot, and many of you are good friends and good football people, but this makes no sense. Brown just completed an undefeated season and is headed to the title game. Last year he had one loss by less than a TD. He's carrying an .830 winning percentage at Texas, better than Darrell Royal's .780. He's never had less than nine wins at Texas, and is on a string of nine straight ten win seasons. If you fire a guy with that kind of coaching ability, who's going to be dumb enough to replace him? "Hey, Bud, sorry, but you've lost one game in two years on a last second catch by an NFL first round draft pick. That ain't good enough for Texas." By the way, I photographed both teams live this year, and Nebraska's defense is no joke. Neither is Texas.

“Alabama will run all over Texas.”

Texas is sitting pretty as an underdog. In fact, this will be eerily similar to Jan. 2006, when the favorite (USC/Alabama) was anointed by the sports media as inevitable champion, with their star running back (Reggie Bush/Mark Ingraham) having just eeked out the Heisman from the Texas QB (Vince Young/Colt McCoy). ESPN declared USC to be the “Greatest Team in History”. Yet Texas hoisted the Crystal Ball.

HOOK ‘EM HORNS!!

Bama played with a chip on their shoulder, for some reasons the Gators lost the “eye of the Tiger”, that’s what makes it so hard to repeat as Champions, you are everybody’s target, week after week we got everybody’s best shot. And it’s hard to keep focus every week, just look at game against Tennessee. But it was clear that Saban and Company all year had one thing in mind, “Beat Florida.” We were talented enough to just get by a mediocre Arkansas team, that was the first warning sign. Maybe we would have been better off losing that game, just like the loss to Ole Miss helped us last year to regain focus.

But in the end, we just flat out ran into a buzzsaw yesterday. It happens.

Yeah, a team that mauled unranked Tennesee by the lopsided score of 12-10, and smothered Auburn... no wait, sorry, trailed Auburn most of the game until the last drive... yeah, a team that good deserves better.

Don't forget they played that tough team Chattanooga somebody late in the season. I always root against the SEC for that reason.

I’m liking the AL/FL rivalry that’s building these days. It’s healthy for the SEC.

I don’t blame teams for that; I blame the BCS. The current system requires a team to go undefeated to have a chance at the title. No legitimate contender is going to put Boise, TCU, or any other top ranked team on their schedule.
Besides, Bama sells out if they’re playing air, so they don’t need a marquee team to fill their seats. Why take the risk when there’s no reward?

It’s easy for us to sit back and say Bama should have scheduled a top twenty team in their non conference schedule, but besides the risk of getting beaten, there’s the risk of getting beaten up.

Last year, Texas played Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Missouri and Texas Tech in a four week span. Oklahoma and Tech were both ranked #1 during the season and were undefeated when they played Texas, Missouri got as high as #2, and Oklahoma State was undefeated when they played. That many tough games in a row wears a team out, no matter how good they are. Top teams schedule breather games during the season. They have to. If they don’t they’re going to lose one and go from a possibility of the title game to the Papa John’s Pizza Bowl.

I agree. Here in the Big 12, Baylor considers A&M their big rival. A&M considers Texas their big rival, and Texas considers Oklahoma their big rival. With OU, I think it’s mutual. Oklahoma State considers Oklahoma it’s big rival. Everybody hates Tech.
When the old Southwest Conference broke up, it was a shame. Arkansas bolted first, and I think it hurt them, as their recruiting base was Texas, and they lost exposure in the state. I don’t think the SEC fan base has ever warmed to Arkansas that much, and their recruiting has gone downhill. Oklahoma and Nebraska used to have a heck of a rivalry, but that busted up when OU went to the Big 12 South.
The SEC is the same way. Every game is a fight, and the rivalries evolve as different teams ascend.
