Amazing Original Photographs from the Civil War

Whether you like history or not... These are pretty amazing considering they were taken up to 145 years ago: A compendium of photos from the Civil War era. Truly fortunate that so many of these have survived. Probably a million wet plate photos were made during the civil war on glass plate. Popular during the war, they lost their appeal afterwards and so many were sold for the glass.

But that one of the pow was a shock to me!

Andersonville Prison is now a Memorial to all American POWs and MIAs of all wars. It is a National Park and and has one of the best historical museums you'll ever see. It is tastefully done, a sober reminder of the sacrifices of the POW/MIAs. I have not noticed any revisionist history in the exhibits. It is a must-visit site if you should find yourself traveling down Highway 75 in central Georgia. Don't waste any time traveling to the peanut farmer museum in Plains, GA.

I most certainly agree with NOMW, Andersonville is a truly amazing visit. Jonesboro/Clayton County Georgia is also a good place to visit. It is of course built up as a suberb of Atlanta, but there are still really nice houses of Civil War era there. I grew up there and my uncle painted the Warren House where there are writing on the walls from the soldiers of both Union and Confederate as it was a hospital for both. When he was painting it (exterior), I would wander around inside and didn’t quite understand the history. Civil War was everywhere in Jonesboro between the Battle of Jonesboro and then Gone with the Wind... but if I believed in ghosts, I would from that experience. That was by far the creepiest place I have ever EVER been and even found a tunnel in a ‘secret’ room under the stairs. My dad supposed it was from either transporting supplies, high ranking officers or slaves. Or all of the above. But he was afraid of the instability obviously from an underground tunnel that was 120 years old.

So anyway, the civil war amazes me still.

It's really sad what's happened to Clayton county.

Kennesaw mountain is pretty cool too.

Viewing old photos such as these helps to get an accurate perspective of history. Many people have a problem separating historical events from a modern context.

Thanks for posting the article on these old, wonderful photos.

I found a photo of the battleground of the Battle of the Seven Pines, VA, where my great-great grandfather Zimariah Mabry died, fighting for the Confederacy.

Copy of photo is now safety tucked away with my genealogy papers.

If you cannot keep history in its proper context, it is impossible to understand. The hardest thing to do of course, but imperative.
