Whether you like history or not... These are pretty amazing considering they were taken up to 145 years ago: A compendium of photos from the Civil War era. Truly fortunate that so many of these have survived. Probably a million wet plate photos were made during the civil war on glass plate. Popular during the war, they lost their appeal afterwards and so many were sold for the glass.

I suppose, however, it's "just" a photo of a tree... anywhere.
I recognize some of the photographs, many of the ones taken at Petersburg are ones I have never seen before.

Adjusting the ropes for hanging the Lincoln assassination conspirators at the Washington Arsenal. In this photo I cropped in tight so you can actually see the faces of the conspirators as the ropes are being place around their necks, just moments before their execution.
This picture is fascinating to me as I did a report on Dr. Mudd who treated John Wilkes Booth for the broken leg for my forensics history class. He ended up being sent to America’s “Devil’s Island” and was eventually released due to his saving hundreds of lives from yellow fever.
I walked away from that modern investigation believing he was convicted for being a slave owner and probably not a nice one as the only testimony against him was former slaves.
Interesting picture though. Which one (if any) is Booth I wonder?
This is pretty damn amazing and thanks for posting!
