SAVANNAH, Ga. An Army cook and single mom may face criminal charges after she skipped her deployment flight to Afghanistan because, she said, no one was available to care for her infant son while she was overseas.
Spc. Alexis Hutchinson, 21, claims she had no choice but to refuse deployment orders because the only family she had to care for her 10-month-old son her mother was overwhelmed by the task, already caring for three other relatives with health problems.
Her civilian attorney, Rai Sue Sussman, said Monday that one of Hutchinson's superiors told her she would have to deploy anyway and place the child in foster care.
"For her it was like, 'I couldn't abandon my child,'" Sussman said. "She was really afraid of what would happen, that if she showed up they would send her to Afghanistan anyway and put her son with child protective services."

Which part of “volunteer army” was not clear?
And they know what causes babies nowadays...
Should have just asked to see Barry’s long form BC.
I have feeling both US army and civiian authority fail this poor lady

Can’t the Army come up with a baby backpack?
In my humble opinion, any female soldier who has a minor child at home should be released from the service. Can’t see why the formerly strongest army in the world puts up with this.
I know I’ll take a lot of hits for this, but the military is no place for women with minor children . . . and this is exhibit A.
I agree. With all of the positions here in the states, why seperate mother and child?
You won’t get any flak from me. You are right.
I agree, but if it’s single moms only. In my experience, servicewomen with children will use them to get out of just about everything.
I understand this mother not wanting to abandoned her child...but you do have provide a guardian (paperwork, names, phone numbers, power of attorney etc) for your children in case you are deployed. It has been this way since the first Gulf War.
No shots here. Women should have remained the reason men go to war. Why in the heck did women stop being feminists???

She will probably be chaptered (kicked out) of the Army. If you are a single Soldier and don’t have a family care plan, the Army will most certainly kick you out.

Hate to be an old poop about this but, in reading this article, I see no mention of a father. Seems to be a lot of this going around these days.
Bad Conduct discharge and loss of all pay and privileges!
And so what happens when the guardian bails out?
Well, I hope you don’t any grief here. I think you’re right.
