Here are my selections for the most pretentious science fiction - fantasy TV shows (RELAX - THE CYNICISM IS ALL IN FUN!):
5. Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1997 - 2003) - Pretty much a chick series.
4. V (original - including miniseries' - 1983 - 1985) - Nazi lizard people invade the earth.
3. Alien Nation (1989 - 1990) - A message series with one message - racism is evil. We get it. Next. (amazingly enough, this series spawned five made for TV movies, which were viewed by all 500 of its fans)
2. Beauty and the Beast (1987 - 1990) - Nauseatingly sappy
1. Babylon 5 (1993 - 1998) - Yeah, I know that "true science fiction fans" like this series because J. Michael Straczynski is a fan of literary SF - and named a Psi Cop "Alfred Bester." Big deal.
I never saw the re-imagined Battlestar Galactica, but from what I've read about it, it definitely would have made my list.
OK. Those are my picks. How about yours?
That plant-based female character who really got off on sunbathing was interesting, too.
Sure. But that's not that old. You're talking to a guy who owns all 48 episodes of Space:1999
Buffy? Took the High School is Hell metaphor to extremes. Never too itself too seriously. And I enjoyed it even though it contained all those things that we good Catholics don't believe in, such as vampires, demons, witches and lesbians.
Granted, the Magic=Drugs bit got really old, really fast.
V, the original miniseries, was a damn fine piece of work, and would've been good even if they hadn't been forced to make it a SF movie with alien Nazis. The second miniseries was good, but had a stinky ending. Wouldn't call it pretentious. The series was a huge, heaping load and belongs in the ashcan reserved for "Highlander 2".
Beauty and the Beast -- that was a chick show that guys could watch. Cop drama in season one, underground society in season two. Bit of a mess in season three.
Babylon 5 -- The SF series that gave us the overarching storylines. A five-year plan that really was a five-year plan (that got shortened to 4). Without it, the new BSG (now that was pretentious up the wazoo!) wouldn't have been possible.
We do not commit mindless violence.
Verdeschi: What is it you want?
Beta Cloud: For you to die.
Verdeschi: We don't die on request.
Thanks for the info
Beta Cloud: Accept your fate!
Verdeschi: So that we can die peacefully?
Beta Cloud: Make your time!
Verdeschi: All your base are belong to us!
From the home office in Ottawa, Ontario, here it the top ten list of good uses for Duct Tape on Moonbase Alpha.
By John Fleming
10. You can fix what’s wrong with Main Mission, if we can find the problem. Hell, tape everything!
9. Patch the hole in Victor’s space suit *before* he goes out to play.
8. Maybe fix some of those Eagles that Alan keeps crashing.
7. Stop air leaks in the windows every time Collins throws himself against one.
6. Secure patients to their beds so they can’t situp and scream, and then cause havoc on the base.
5. Securely attach the monster’s heads so they don’t flop around during a fight scene.
4. After wearing the same clothes for over 5 years, we can cut them up into little pieces and make a new outfit everyday.
3. Tape our mouths shut when Tony makes a new batch of beer.
2. May finally stop Helena from screaming.
And the number one use for Duct Tape on Moon Base Alpha...
1. With enough of it, we can tape ourselves to a planetary orbit and stop this infernal wondering the Galaxy thing.
It finally dawned on me what is wrong, is is the DS9 of the stargate franchise.
I forgot about Brimstone, I seem to remember that it was one of those shows that as soon as I discover it, it gets cancelled.
I bought the Dresden Files DVDs, A couple of times a year I rewatch them, one of the few shows that stand up to repeated viewing.
LOL
Yeah, she was!
My favorire was Ka D’Argo.
Stark irked the heck outta me!
“3. Red Dwarf
2. Mork and Mindy
1. Futurama”
Mork and Mindy?
You might as well include ALF and My Favorite Martian. How about I Dream of Jeannie while your at it?
I loved the SG 1 series. It was well acted and most of the episodes were entertaining and not too cheesy.
Buffy was smart and funny with great dialogue.
Third Rock, Fraggle Rock, My Favorite Martian, Bewitched, Max Head Room.
I just notice something no one metioned Robo Cop!
Tell him that I thought The Starlost was great, his best work since The City on the Edge of Forever. OK, maybe not. While I think Ellison is a first order jackass and I do own The Starlost on DVD, I don't hate enough enough to want you to trigger "the big one".
I watched Smallville for a couple of years and enjoyed it, but it finally just ran out of stuff to do.
Star Gate Universe. The DP insisted we watch the first episode after which he declared it boring and the characters did nothing but fight with each other, but I’ve stuck with it.
The episode where they had to decide on 15 to go was strangely moving when the people on the ship were trying to pass the time before an inevitable death. Reminded me of the people on the Titanic.
Of course, I knew death was not inevitable because ... well, those were the starts. I like Eli.
I liked DS9. There were some corny episodes but I loved the Ferengi and ... the baseball episode was great, I think I still have it on tape and there was an episode about war that was very moving.
Blakes Seven.....great stories, really cheesy FX, good looking chicks, foppish self-involved half-a-homo brit actors acting tough...it was a hoot.
