DETROIT Like the rundown houses and shuttered storefronts in his Detroit neighborhood, bleakness abounds in LeRoy Taylor's future.
He is among tens of thousands reaching adulthood in a city where the American Dream appears just outside their reach. Taylor, 20, spends empty hours on basketball courts, zoned out in front of a television or aimlessly pedaling through streets he desperately wants to leave, but doesn't have the work skills, education or money to do so.
"I fill out applications. No one will call me back," said Taylor, stopping his bike long enough to hustle change for cigarettes near a west side bus stop. "It's useless. It's real scary."

Detroit high school students historically have done poorly on standardized tests. For example, 32 percent of 11th graders met or exceeded reading standards and only 14 percent did the same in math on the 2007 Michigan Merit Examination. Statewide averages were 60 percent in reading and 47 percent in math.

Tina Evans, 19, said she has submitted about 25 applications, mostly for minimum-wage work. While she waits, Evans pushes her 4-month-old daughter around the neighborhood in a stroller.
"There is nothing else to do. Nothing is out here," said Evans, who lives with her mother. She said she was kicked out of Detroit schools for fighting.
Taylor who said he's been jobless "my whole life" dropped out of Cooley High School when he was 16 due to "lack of wanting to go to school," he said. If only he could get out of the city, he said, he could be accomplishing something.
He and his 4-year-old daughter live with his mother, who reminds him constantly that he still needs to get his diploma.

Oh, crap...I'm laughing my butt off now...
It sounds like they attempted to name the kid after the former East African country of Tanganyika (now Tanzania), but failed to check the encyclopedia on how to spell it. Fail.
That sums it up. The single best option when you are in an area that doesn’t offer good opportunities: Go to more fertile pastures.
I don’t understand why people stay. I’d be on the first bus or train out of town. The overall state of the Texas economy right now, for instance, is excellent. Most hospitals will pay you to attend nursing school, which is going to be far better than a minimum wage job. It’s not convenient or easy, but it is simple.
He won't qualify for today's military. He is unmotivated, uneducated, and immersed in self-pity.
He would never make it through boot camp.
Joined the Marine Corp at age 17 and never looked back.
If these kids really wanted to get out of the city and college is not an option (as it wasn't for me), they can quit whining and join the U.S. military. It was the best thing I ever did for myself.
If a pig wants to lay in sh-t, let them do so. It is their nature.
yep, unless we understand that the 'utopia' was sold short by underfunding and allowing these poor kids to 'fall thru the "crack[s] [yeah pun...sure], we wont get bazillions more to piss down an endless rathole to skim for the NWO lordships...
one step at a time...
thats all any of us really got if ya think about it...every last one of us has either pretty much already 'been there, done that' [bootstraps-wise] or could be put there by any number of natural or man-made miserys in a heartbeat...
my cynical side says these people are fictional characters of the AllPravda machine...
“...Turn the abandoned parts of that ville into a DOD USAF civil engineers, Navy Seabees and Army corp of engineers training ground...”
That’s actually a seriously good idea...the only thing I can see problematical with it is we’re STILL spending taxpayer dollars on people who basically will go back to their old ways the minute the last olive drab deuce-and-a-half packs up and leaves.
New Orleans is a perfect example. They re-elected the maggot mayor that left them to drown, just because he was black.
People have to WANT help themselves. Some will and will get a leg up and prosper, but most won’t, because it’s easier to be led than lead.
But then again, maybe it’s a victory if only a few make it.
dang, it just hit me that the regular Army aint lookin for crackbaby recruits...BUT the 'new' national [black] security force will prolly takin volunteers/conscripts before long...so he does have a future afterall...
Any “National Civilian Security Force” they try to put together will be shredded the first time they go up against someone determined to stop them.
They’ll use them the same way the Nazis used the SS and the SA and local POLICE departments; to intimidate those already inclined towards being intimidated.
“One can only be terrorized if one LETS oneself be terrorized.” - Col. Cooper (God bless him).
An army of thug-gangsta punks versus small-unit, motivated, determined, trained professionals and Patriots...That will be some battle. All of about 15 minutes...
Not a road they should even THINK about going down. But hey..nobody ever said Libs were rational.
Gee who wouldn't want this model citizen as an employee?
Further proof the Chris Rock was right when he distinguishes between Black People and (The word that starts with “N” that no white person can ever say).
No problem brother G...my right-wing knee-jerk reaction simply kicked in!!!
These are the casualties of the “Black Civil War”. Black folks with sense left the inner city faster than whites could move to the ‘burbs. While the residents have my empathy, I have seen this story too many times to just blame the “evil white man”. Unless the evil white man, was a liberal, big government drone...

It’s “abandoned” property .....not giving shit back. Sell it back and provide new tax base, manufacturing and jobs and people who see a clean slate will build and buy.
No more free rides if I had the keys to this outfit !
