My theory—call it the “Oakley effect”—is that really smart people often don’t know how to accept and react constructively to criticism. (A neuroscientist might say they “have underdeveloped neurocircuitry for integrating negatively valenced stimuli.”) This is because smart people are whizzes at problems that only need one person to figure out. Indeed, people are evaluated from kindergarten through college prep SATs on the basis of such “single solver” problems. If you are often or nearly always right with these kinds of problems, your increased confidence in your own abilities would be accompanied by an inadvertent decrease in your capacity to deal with criticism. After all, your experience would have shown that your critics were usually wrong.

Most liberals are just dumbasses. Finding a few intelligent ones is like finding an honest one, usually they are the same person.

I asked the people at the table if I could go in .. they said "it's only for Mensa members" to which I replied ... I belong to the San Francisco chapter (joined in 1982 on a bet). My wife then noticed that they were passing out Obama badges. I said "Obama !!! ... I thought you people were smart.

1. Lazy: (often but not always stupid) This group just wants to vote themselves money.
2. Pseudointellectuals who mistake liberal thought for sophistication: Can have a college degree. May have read one nonfiction book unrelated to sports or cooking in their adult life following college.
3. Vested interest: Anyone whose job requires at least some public funding. (Some members of this group are obviously in category one as well.)

Of course that will alienate trial lawyers, but they’ll bury something else in the 1,000 pages to cover them.
Having dinner or going out with them was an ordeal. I tried to pretend that I wasn't with them or didn't know them. They were oblivious to almost everything and everyone around them.
It was excruciating just to be near them. They were from another planet as far as I was concerned. I'm pretty sure that they're Obama voters.

Good point! They can’t handle criticism or being wrong. However, I think ego and stubborness trumps their ‘smartness’ with their NEED to be right.
On the other hand, intelligent people search and welcome all thoughts, ideas and then draw their own conclusion in a informed manner.
I’m still ducking and covering. Too tired to engage in battle, but, yes, the point of the article applies to liberals and conservatives. All smart people can become stagnated in their ideas. It most especially applies to libertarians, but you didn’t hear it from me.
I was watching some panel thing on FOX, and they were bandying tort reform about like they knew something about it, and I wanted to throw something at the screen, but since High Plains Invaders was coming on sci fi channel I didn’t.

Hmm. Most smart liberals live inside a bubble that filters out serious criticism of liberal ideas. These people listen to NPR, they read their liberal newspapers, they watch MSM television. The smarter a liberal is, the more care he takes in constructing his own personal protective bubble. His intellect is just one of the tools he uses to protect and promote his ideology.

And that's socialism/liberalism/communism/progressiveness (or whatever they call themselves today) for you. It is the same old story, even though their ideas and ideals have without exception failed every single time and have caused nothing but death and misery, they are still deluded into believing that "this time it will be different."
Usually this delusion is caused by the belief that the past reason for failure was
1) The right people were not in charge, but the new leader is so much smarter and/or less corrupt than anyone that has tried and failed before, therefore he/she/it will make it work this time. (Hence Obama's nickname "The One")
2) We just didn't spend enough money if we only spend more and spend it sooner…. (2nd stimulus anybody)
3) or it's whatever scapegoat/Emmanuel Goldstein they can find fault for opposing them. ( Bush's fault)
Take Health Care, Where ever national health care has been implemented, enormous cost over runs, rationing, waiting list, poor quality, scientific stagnation, and yes even death panels (though of course they are euphemistically called something more benign i.e. The Federal Coordinating Council for Comparative Effectiveness Research) inevitably become the norm.
There's a reason why anyone with the means comes here and not the other way around.
Yet Liberals believe (and expect us to believe) that this government, a government run by such masterminds as Obama, Pelosi, Reid will somehow finally get it right where others have failed and "this time it will be different" and the government will provide the quality and quantity that we as Americans expect.

That's because most of their beliefs are made of emotions rather than cold, hard logic. In short, liberals don't live in the real world. Only libs could concoct a scheme like their health-care plan that is supposed to save money by plunging the country into far worse debt than has ever been experienced.
