Something strange over Phoenix

Something strange happening in the skys over Phoenix. Pairs of Jets (not commercial) are flying in traffic patterns not used for commercial flights (to my knowledge). They sound like fighter jets (at 18000 feet - or so) going toward S. Calif.

Many sets of two flying in alternate flight paths (north and south of Phoenix) and two jets flying pattern (probably out of Luke AFG). The two local jets are flying a search pattern and go dark from time to time. Making hard right and left hand turns.

Started at or before 9:45 Arizona Std time. That is when I started seeing the patterns and they may be continuing.

If anyone inbetween here and Calif sees anything abnormal in flights - give a hollar.

Yeah, I have heard aircraft referred to as ships in the last 10 years or so. One instance I recall was that air force enlistees wanted to be pilots because “then you are captain of your own ship” meaning captain of an aircraft is afforded more control and prestige. The other was a seasoned non-milatary pilot who flies charter prop aircraft and helicopters. He was speaking in an animate fashion about a helicopter that did a miraculous job of pulling a helicopter out of an auto-rotation over a children’s elementary school. He was referring to ‘the ship’ or ‘forgetting to fly the ship’ and staying above the ‘deck’ etc. I don’t recall my father, a pilot, every speaking this way of aircraft - seems to be on the newer or military side.

Its on MSNBC now, they are looking for a person of interest called jongaltsr, they believe they have him targeted and FEMA has been mobilized to level a 1 mile area around his suspected location to deny him cover or escape. Daylight will bring perhaps a standoff, capitulation, confrontation, meditation, prevarication, incantation, master...uh, uh, uh, and newsifacation. The President is in the White House command center directing the search for jongaltsr and will hold a press conference tomorrow at 7AM on this search. This is the first test of the President’s campaign promise to assure the “safety and security” of the nation; unconfirmed sources have stated that the President stated to Rham Emmanual, “Take chuck out”. We will now break to Chris Matthews and Keith Olberman for their measured analysis of this developing crisis.

Hmmm, I’ve often heard of helos referred to as “air ships”, most often in a law enforcement context. As a private pilot, though, I’ve not used or heard the term “ships” used in everyday conversation regarding airplanes.

My immediate thought was that they were responding to some emergency or natural disaster. I worked on one such exercise in Turkey many moons ago.

The difference then was we sent 5 or 6 planes in at once to set up communication teams and later teams would come in 12 - 24 hours later to actually help with evacuation and medical emergencies.

This looked more like a fighter leading a bomber or cargo place. Each set of two had the same profile. Fighter in front and heavy "cargo'? plane behind.

Ignore that stuff. Petty. The SS has better things to so that contact people that say things unless it is a direct threat, for instance, someone says they plan to do something. What was your "second" thought? And what "cargo" would ever need that much protection? If that's what it was... and sets of planes? Odd.

Just why did they head in the direction of S. Calif. Andrews AFB near DC is where they would normally supply such equipment (I would think)?!

It is not new. The military often uses such terminology; things like 'two ship formation' for a pair of fighters.

What was your "second" thought?

My second thought was bombers being escorted for some operation which was not immediate but possibly intended to redeploy heavy bombers for possible action in Korea or elsewhere - or even for a strike from the east against targets in Afghanistan or even Iran.

Who knows? I surely don't. Just thinking out-loud!
