Ridley Scott Will Direct Alien 5
empire online ^ | 31 July 2009

Variety's story is more concerned that the screenplay is being written by Jon Spaihts, but the headline and the one-line explanation are enough to make us run around the room with glee: Ridley Scott is now attached to Alien 5 as director.

Commercials director Carl Erik Rinsch was originally reported to be the Scott Brothers' choice to helm, with their Scott Free Productions, well, producing. But there's no mention of Rinsch this morning. Were Fox unconvinced? Or did Ridley start getting more interested the more involved he became?

Here’s hoping this one brings back the tension of the original and isn’t adventures of elephant man.

Entertainment is truly a commodity. Nearly everything is a rehash or ripoff. Some of it may be enjoyable, but it's depressing that there seems to be so little incentive to create anything new and interesting. I guess that's just too risky to the bottomline.

The franchise jumped the shark after the campy teen horror flick named “Aliens Vs. Predator: Requiem”. What’s next? Aliens Vs. Jar Jar Binks?

Alien 4: Encore! You thought _that_ was extreme, how about this! and tHiS! and THIS!
Alien 5: Uh ... sorry about that previous thing. Back to Mr. Scott ...

I read somewhere that movies, even bad ones, are now so expensive to produce that it's easier to raise money based on a known set of characters, plot, and ect. than it is to convince investors to plunk down money on something wholly new. With old stale concepts you can at least point to the success of the preceding episodes to tout the profit expected from the next sequel. That's apparently why we have some Police Academy 6 and Aliens 5 and so on ad nauseum.

‘Alien’ scared the cr@p outta me! I also liked ‘Aliens.’

Then I lost interest...but I’d give a new Scott film a try. ;)

How about Bukaroo Banzai and the Hong Kong Cavaliers meet Aliens?

How about Dolly Parton and Godzilla meet the Alien?

Can we start a list?

So Hollywood continues its movie sequence formula:
1) a low budget film does well
2) the pour tons of money into a sequel and make a pretty good film
3) they pour more money into a tired idea and make a poor film
4) then in desperation, they try an ‘alternate experience’
5) in its last gasp, Hollywood tries time travel (either a prequel or otherwise)

Star Wars
Star Trek
Terminator
Godfather
and now Aliens

Aliens was one of the best sequels ever. They shouldn’t have gone any further.

And what’s with them taking the best parts out of Aliens anyway?
