Weekly Roundup - Living On Nothing Edition Category: Roundups | Comments(15)

Did you hear about the guy that lives on nothing? No seriously, he lives on zero dollars a day. Meet Daniel Suelo, who lives in a cave outside Moab, Utah. Suelo has no mortgage, no car payment, no debt of any kind. He also has no home, no car, no television, and absolutely no “creature comforts.” But he does have a lot of creatures, as in the mice and bugs that scurry about the cave floor he’s called home for the last three years.

To us, Suelo probably sounds a little extreme. Actually, he probably sounds very extreme. After all, I suspect most of you reading this are doing so under the protection of some sort of man-made shelter, and with some amount of money on your person, and probably a few needs for money, too. And who doesn’t need money unless they have completely unplugged from the grid? Still, it’s an amusing story about a guy who rejects all forms of consumerism as we know it.

They must remain a pair and need each other, there has to be a bond, the bulldogs killing the mother, then starving for several days.<<<

Did the animal control people take the bulldogs away? Those dogs, like pit bulls, can be great pets, but they are feisty, and idiot people mistreat and abuse them until all the natural friendliness and loyalty is beaten out of them. Poor dogs, doomed to a life of misery. It just kills me to think of it.

I am glad you saved your kitties. They sound like a barrel of laughs for you. It’s amazing that each one has their own personality.

We have a laser light that our terrier-lab mix just loves to chase and pounce on. It’s hilarious watching her run after it or whip the couch pillows around in her teeth. I bet your cats would love a laser light!

And then there is always string.

That is the one that I listen to Las Vegas, Denver and San Diego on, use their web player and it is even better, on the page there is the drop down at the middle for different players that you will use.<<<

LOL and I had that bookmarked from when you first gave it to us, and didn’t realize it was the same site. Before when I tried it, it worked great, but they only showed a tri-state channel. Now, I have found the one on there that has just the two downstate counties (I live right on the line between the two), and it is great. I chose the one with winamp and it too is working great.

And then there is always string.<<<

String is outlawed.......

I was making a stringball out of the threads that seal the cat food sacks, for it is a good strong one and would crochet into good dishrags, knots and all, I made them years ago and loved them for real cleaning.

TT of course played with it.

Then came the morning that he had a stomach ache and threw up, and I had to clean it up, a mess, he had unwound about half my thread ball, wrapped it around the computer connector wires and modem wire, and then got sick on top of it.

The truth is, TT has strings hanging, where there were no strings before, he kills all strings, they are ‘practice snakes’.

He would love a light to chase.

He would chase anything and does so.

The dogs were the pit bulls and the dog catcher did catch them and the last I heard, still had them, for no one wanted to claim them.

Good, now you will know the truth about what is really going on in your area.

I am amazed at the number of attacks, using a hammer as a weapon, even the women use them, just go down the street and look for someone to attack.

I salute the Las Vegas Police for their quick action, when it is a
missing or abducted child call and know of one home that has a kid that caught hell, last night.

The report was a child on the street, who was called to a van, then when he attempted to walk away, the side door opened and he was pulled into the van and gone.

In about 5 minutes, they had the van stopped.

It was the child’s father.

No crime, just a parent attempting to tell the kid what to do.

And to think a year or two ago my husband poo-poohed the protest idea.

That is just wonderful - your hubby's transition.

Mine was similar. I was joining the 9-12 Project activities and he wasn't even interested. Then, a bunch of people at his work went to the April 15th Tea Party (the boss took anyone that wanted to go to lunch, then to the teap party in the afternoon). The atmosphere of like-minded people, all polite and well-behaved but with a purpose and intensity, got him hooked. We've been to every activity they've had since then. And he wants to go to the big Tea Party next July 4th rather than our usualy commitment herein the mountains - which is a big step for him! It's so nice to be a like mind in house, as well. (I have no idea how James Carville and Mary Matalin stay married...)

can imagine the conservative parents with their kids: “Don’t throw that on the ground! Pick it up and throw it in the trash barrel over there!”

The kids at the Tea Parties, etc, that I've attended here were wonderful. If all kids were like that, I might consider teaching again! (However, the vast majority of those kids were homeschooled - which IMO is why they were so respectful.)

I thought at first TT might not be a real bright cat, but I am finding that he is brighter than any cat I have known, to be so young, maybe 2 or 3 months old, he can find more ways to entertain himself than any other cat that I have known.

I think that is the sign of a smart cat too. My Cotton was like that, while her brother and sister waited to be entertained. Even now, I'll find her napping in different spots around the house for some variety, while her brother and sister are consistently in the same places. And when they get to go outside here in the mountains, Cotton is only one to wander around on her own, not even needing the others - while they end up following her. She marches to her own drummer, that's for sure. Probably even has her own orchestra!

And maybe Mama was pulling strings while waiting for her Angel wings.

What a sweet thought!

I never thought of it from the dog's point of view, just the poor victims. I guess the dogs are victims as well. I've always thought that if a dog attacks another creature, the owners should be the ones put to sleep. There's always a way to prevent that.

We have some idiot (liberals of course) up here with a known cat-killing dog. He's killed one of their own cats and maimed another. They let this dog loose in the community - while insisting they don't. They take him out in the forest and then let him go. They have no idea where he goes and I've seen him just a few yards from my house - but they insist they don't let him free around houses. So, I've been taking my cats outside with me armed, in case that dog comes by. Another neighbor told me they told the dog owners that he will be armed if that dog ever comes by his property again. The liberals were incensed! It's too bad we can't just get rid of the libs and retrain the dog or give him to someone more responsible.

There you have it captured.

They do indeed have their own Orchestra and are hearing a music that we don’t know.

Animals have a brain and a soul, so they are Angel candidates in my book.

The other morning I was going into a black out and all of a sudden TT was there and kept attempting to get action out of the hanging hand, so much so that he brought me out of it, then he was off to sing a different song.

A lot of action for a 2 month old baby.

He was not giving it the ‘snake killing action’, but was tugging at it, nudging and attempting to get it to move again.

Or else God got bored with the fools he had created and called humans and decided that the world needed something very special, so he made cats for fun and smiles and dogs so we would have a faithful friend.

Which Herbs Are Good for Acid Reflux?
Contributor

Acid reflux is a condition that occurs when the contents in the small intestines and stomach move into the esophagus and cause regurgitation, nausea, vomiting, belching and chronic heartburn. If the condition is left untreated you run the risk of developing ulcers, sores in the esophagus, and precancerous cells in the esophagus, too. There are, however, alternative remedies that can treat acid reflux successfully.

Cat’s Claw
1. Cat’s claw is an herb that has been used to treat stomach ulcers, to enhance immunological functioning, to help blood vessels dilate, and to eliminate excess waters in the body. The sterols and tannins in cat’s claw help alleviate swelling and inflammation, while the qunovic acid glycosides offer antiviral properties. Consume cat’s claw as a tea to alleviate acid reflux by steeping 1 to 10g of the herb in 8 oz. of hot water for 10 minutes. After straining, drink the tea up to three times a day.
Ginger
2. Ginger has been used for over 2,000 years to relieve a variety of stomach ailments, including nausea, diarrhea and upset stomach. Ginger has pungent phenol compounds, including gingerols and shogaols as well as volatile oils that alleviate nausea, vomiting and motion sickness. This herb can be used to alleviate digestive disorders like acid reflux. Take up to 75 to 2000mg of the herb daily to ease heartburn and to relax the stomach.
Green Tea
3. Green tea is made from leaves that are not fermented and has polyphenols that offer natural antioxidants. The antioxidants in green tea help to destroy free radicals that are responsible for damaging DNA and causing cellular death. Green tea is used to treat conditions like inflammatory bowel disease, ulcerated colitis, and Crohn’s disease; this herb contains L-theanine, which offers a calming effect on one’s nervous and digestive system. Green tea can be consumed as a beverage two to three times daily.
Licorice
4. Licorice offers relief for a variety of stomach conditions, since it is a natural demulcent. Licorice contains glycyrrhizin, which is responsible for soothing an upset stomach and coating the stomach, esophagus and intestines with a protective coating. This herb can be consumed at a dosage of 250 to 500mg three times every day; the supplement can be chewed a couple of hours before every meal for ease of acid reflux symptoms.
Marshmallow
5. Marshmallow leaves and roots have mucilage in them, which creates a gummy-like substance when it is unified with water. The mucilage mixture then serves as a coating for an irritated stomach or esophagus; thus, marshmallow is an all natural treatment for acid reflux and other stomach conditions. Create a tea out of marshmallow leaves by steeping 2 to 5 tsp. of the dried herbal leaves in 5 oz. of boiling hot water for 15 minutes. The tea can be safely consumed three times a day.
Slippery Elm
6. Slippery elm, like marshmallow, contains mucilage; the mucilage, when mixed with water, creates a coating that helps to sooth the intestines, stomach and esophagus. Slippery elm also has a number of antioxidants that help to reduce inflammatory bowel problems, too. Consume slippery elm at a dosage of 800 to 1000mg three times a day to alleviate acid reflux symptoms.
Turmeric
7. Turmeric has been used in Chinese and Ayurvedic medicine to treat stomach ailments. The herb promotes bile production in the gallbladder and eases digestive functions. Turmeric can be consumed to treat gas, bloating, indigestion and heartburn, and the herb has been successful in treating issues related to ulcerative colitis. Consume turmeric at a dosage of 300mg three times a day for stomach inflammation and/or pain relief.

Acid reflux — The backflow of stomach acid into the esophagus. Acid reflux generally occurs because the lower esophageal sphincter relaxes and allows harsh stomach juices to flow into the esophagus. Also known as gastroesophageal reflux.

Acid suppressors — Medicines that slow down the production of acid in the stomach. Proton (or acid) pump inhibitors and H2-receptor antagonists are the two main types of acid suppressors.

Liza de Guia’s Videos - NYC’s Cool New Backyard Farms:

Growing More Than Just Produce

Urban NYC farmers have set their eyes on a new prize: transforming privately owned
backyards into lush, fruitful farmlands.

By signing up to share your yard with a urban farmer, you can eat fresh from your
own personal farm during the harvest months, and even sell produce to your neighbors
- growing a community built around fresh local food. The best part is, you don’t
even have to lift a finger, BK Farmyards does all the farming for you.

Kitsilano Corn Fields

Maria grew three colourful varieties of corn this year at the Vancouver Compost
Demonstration Garden. Visiting six-year-olds from a neighbourhood after-school program
were fascinated by the new colours of their favourite food and each child got to
taste a kernel from a freshly picked cob.

Deconstructing Dinner - Nelson Urban Acres / Massachusetts Avenue Project

Nelson Urban Acres is bringing fresh produce closer to home. They are a multi-plot
urban farm in Nelson, British Columbia that launched into operation in 2009 based
on the SPIN farming model. Co-founders Paul Hoepfner-Homme and Christoph Martens
are working backyard gardens within the city using low-impact, organic farming
techniques to grow fresh produce.

Poor dogs. My son used to watch the Animal Planet show where the cops came and took the cats and dogs out of the homes where they are mistreated or neglected. It boils my blood to see that... I can’t watch the shows without getting enraged.

I’m glad to know so many kind-hearted people.

These stories are very entertaining. Maybe Scott could bring you a laser light. They are only about $3.

String of Playground Arsons Worries Fire Officials
Sacramento-area fire officials are worried about a string of arson fires at school and park playgrounds since Labor Day.

Sac Fire spokesman Jim Doucette says there’s no evidence the arsons are linked – but investigators are hunting for clues to find out who’s responsible.

Doucette: “Arsonists are very sick people. A lot of them don’t just stop at lighting small fires. They want to have bigger and bigger fires. If it is just kids messing around, then we can educate them about what they’re doing. A lot of times that works. But if it’s an arsonist, then we got our hands full.”

The first fire was discovered on Labor Day, at Castori Elementary School in the Twin Rivers Unified School District. The other three all came sometime this past weekend: one at Village Elementary, in North Highlands; another at Charlie Jensen Park, near the Sacramento Executive Airport; and the third at Hiram Johnson High School in Eastern Sacramento.

Officials are asking anyone with information to contact the Fire Department’s arson tip line (916-808-8732) or the Crime Alert hotline (916-443-HELP).

OMG - do you go into black outs often? Thanks goodness TT was there to help you. I’m convinced that my cats can tell when I’m sick or even just sad - they act differently and hang around, trying to help.<<<

Yes, I black out often, that is why I do not leave the house and some days it is worse than others.

I found them this morning, in the bowl that I keep handy for the leaking roof, sleeping facing each other and their arms wrapped around each other.

Yes, animals do know when folks are sick.

When we lived in Wellton, out of Yuma,
Misty a full grown Nubian milk goat, who had figured out how to work the magnetic latch on the screen door and often came in to check on me, if I was quiet too long, you knew it was her if you heard the sound of high heels tripping down the hall, this was after we quit sleeping out doors, where she wanted us to be, in her world, and had gotten a larger mobile home.

One year my 8 year old niece came for a vacation and got very sick, suddenly.

Misty came in on her own, went to where Angela was laying and smelled the air all around Angela’s body and then turned to me and started telling me something.

If I had been able to understand her, she might have had the cure.

As it was, Dr. Kline asked me to send for her mother, yes, she was very sick and he did not have a clue as to why and we never did find out why, for Diana came at once and took her to her regular Doctor in San Diego and they never found out why.

Animals know far more than many realize.
