Weekly Roundup - Living On Nothing Edition Category: Roundups | Comments(15)

Did you hear about the guy that lives on nothing? No seriously, he lives on zero dollars a day. Meet Daniel Suelo, who lives in a cave outside Moab, Utah. Suelo has no mortgage, no car payment, no debt of any kind. He also has no home, no car, no television, and absolutely no “creature comforts.” But he does have a lot of creatures, as in the mice and bugs that scurry about the cave floor he’s called home for the last three years.

To us, Suelo probably sounds a little extreme. Actually, he probably sounds very extreme. After all, I suspect most of you reading this are doing so under the protection of some sort of man-made shelter, and with some amount of money on your person, and probably a few needs for money, too. And who doesn’t need money unless they have completely unplugged from the grid? Still, it’s an amusing story about a guy who rejects all forms of consumerism as we know it.

I thought of you, when I found this in my emails.....smile.

“Where do you buy “Scratch”?

My Mother never let me help much in the kitchen when I was growing up. As a result, my cooking ability was practically nonexistent when I got married. But, I did remember Mother mentioning to her friends that she’d made cakes, pies and other things from scratch. So my first priority, after the honeymoon, was to locate some scratch.

With Mother’s delicious cakes in mind, my first trip to the supermarket was to buy some scratch. I found the aisle that read “Baking Items”. I spent a good 15 minutes looking at everything from vegetable oil, sugar, flour and chocolate, without seeing a sign of scratch. I was sure it wouldn’t be in with the pickles or the meat.

I asked the clerk if they carried scratch. He looked at me funny and finally said, “You’ll have to go to the store on the corner.” When I got there, it turned out to be a feedstore. I thought it rather strange, but
decided cakes were feed.

“Do you have any scratch?”, I asked the clerk. He asked me how much I wanted. I suggested a pound or two. His reply was, “How many chickens do you have? It only comes in 25 or 50 lb. bags.” I really didn’t understand why he mentioned chickens, but I had heard Mother say she had made chicken casserole from scratch so I bought 25 lbs. and hurried home.

My next problem was to find a recipe calling for scratch. I went through every single page of my lovely Better Homes and Gardens Cookbook, given to us as a wedding present looking for a recipe calling for scratch. There I was with 20 lbs. of scratch...and no recipe.

When I opened the scratch I had doubts that a beautiful cake would ever result from such a hard-looking ingredient. I hoped with the addition of liquids and heat the result would be successful. I had no need to mention my problem to my new husband as he had suggested very early on in our marriage that he liked to cook and would gladly take over anytime.

One day, he made a pie and when I told him how good it was, he said he had made it from scratch. That assured me that it could be done.

Being a new bride was scary when I found out he made pies, cakes and even lemon pudding from scratch....well, if he made all of those things from scratch, I was sure he had bought a 25 lb. bag also. But, I couldn’t find it and when I checked my supply...... it was still full.

At this point, I was ready to give up because all of the people seemed to know about scratch except me.

I decided to try a different approach. One day when my husband was not doing anything, I said, “Honey, I wish you’d bake a cake.”

He got out the flour, sugar, salt, baking powder, vanilla, eggs, milk and butter, but not a sign of scratch. I watched him blend it together, pour it into a pan and slide it into the oven to bake.

An hour later as we were eating the cake, I looked over at him, smiled, and said, “Honey, why don’t we raise a few chickens?”.

Hugh posted this to the BD Now group. It is so telling I pinched it
for our benefit.

Steve Solomon

DON’T YOU KNOW?

Young Chuck moved to Texas and bought a Donkey from a farmer for $100.
The farmer agreed to deliver the Donkey the next day.

The next day the farmer drove up and said, ‘Sorry son, but I have some bad
news, the donkey died.’

Chuck replied, ‘Well, then just give me my money back.’

The farmer said, ‘Can’t do that. I went and spent it already.’

Chuck said, ‘Ok, then, just bring me the dead donkey.’

The farmer asked, ‘What ya gonna do with him?

Chuck said, ‘I’m going to raffle him off.’

The farmer said, ‘You can’t raffle off a dead donkey!’

Chuck said, ‘Sure I can Watch me. I just won’t tell anybody he’s dead.’

A month later, the farmer met up with Chuck and asked, ‘What happened with
that dead donkey?’

Chuck said, ‘I raffled him off. I sold 500 tickets at two dollars a piece
and made $998.’

The farmer said, ‘Didn’t anyone complain?’

Chuck said, ‘Just the guy who won. So I gave him his two dollars back.’

Chuck now leads the US bank bailout team.

Or Maybe this rings true:

Once upon a time, in a village, a man appeared and announced to the
villagers that he would buy monkeys for $10 each.

The villagers, seeing that there were many monkeys around, went out to the
forest and started catching them. The man bought thousands at $10 and, as
his supply started to diminish, the villagers stopped their effort.

He further announced that he would now buy at $20 for a monkey. This renewed
the efforts of the villagers and they started catching monkeys again.

Soon the supply diminished even further and people started going back to
their farms. The offer increased to $25 each, and the supply of monkeys
became so small that it was an effort to even find a monkey, let alone catch
it!

The man now announced that he would buy monkeys at $50! However, since he
had to go to the city on some business, his assistant would now buy on
behalf of him.

In the absence of the man, the assistant told the villagers, “Look at all
these monkeys in the big cage that the man has collected. I will sell them
to you at $35, and when the man returns from the city, you can sell them to
him for $50 each.”

The villagers rounded up all their savings and bought all the monkeys. They
never saw the man nor his assistant again, only monkeys everywhere!

Now you have a better understanding of how the stock market works.

Eighteen Overlooked Symptoms of Adrenal Fatigue
_http://www.naturalnews.com/024985_cortisol_blood_adrenal_fatigue.html_
(http://www.naturalnews.com/024985_cortisol_blood_adrenal_fatigue.html)
by Patty Donovan, citizen journalist

(NaturalNews) More and more alternative health practitioners are beginning
to recognize how widespread adrenal fatigue (hypoadrenia) is in the
general population. In mainstream medicine, doctors refuse to recognize there is
a problem with the adrenal glands unless you meet the diagnostic criteria
for Addison’s disease (extremely little adrenal function) or Cushing’s
disease (hyper adrenal). These diseases together affect less than 2% of the
population, but some experts believe that upwards of 80% of the population
suffers from some level of adrenal insufficiency. Besides the usual symptoms of
overwhelming fatigue and inability to handle stress, the symptoms listed
below provide a more complete picture of adrenal fatigue and are often
overlooked even by alternative practitioners.

oASTHMA, BRONCHITIS or CHRONIC COUGH:
Any person with lung problems, especially asthma and bronchitis should be
checked for poor adrenal function. The lungs cannot respond appropriately
to stress, allergens etc because of lack of cortisol. Asthma is often
considered an emotional disease because stress can trigger an attack. Fix the
adrenals so the body can respond normally to stress and the asthma will
disappear.

oALLERGIES:
Most allergies involve an inflammatory process. As the adrenal function
decreases, allergies worsen. Generally, if the adrenal glands were
functioning properly, the body would not respond to the allergen. This same
anti-inflammatory effect is important in asthma also. As the adrenal glands heal,
allergies are markedly reduced.

oRECURRENT INFECTIONS:
Severe and/or recurrent infections (especially respiratory) often indicate
adrenal problems. The more severe, the more frequently it occurs or the
longer it lasts, the more likely adrenal fatigue is involved in the
infection.

oMUSCLE WEAKNESS AND BACK PAIN:
Dr. Goodheart identified five skeletal muscles which can indicate adrenal
function.
These are 1) sartorius, 2) gracilis, 3) posterior tibialis, 4)
gastrocnemius, and 5) soleus. When the adrenal glands are malfunctioning, there will
be weakness in one or more of these muscles. The sartorius and gracilis
attach on the pelvis. Weakness in these muscles can cause the sacro-iliac joint
to subluxate posteriorally (toward the back) leading to low back pain. In
persons with adrenal fatigue, low back pain is frequently caused by
instability of the pelvis rather than an actual back problem. These same two
muscles also attach to the knee and help provide support. Weakness will cause
knee pain, weakness and instability of the joint. Any person with knee
problems should be checked for adrenal fatigue. The other 3 muscles mentioned
stabilize the feet and ankles. Weakness of any of these muscles leads to
complaints of tired, aching feet, weak ankles or aching calves. The symptoms
related to the muscle weakness will improve when the adrenal glands are
treated.

oSLEEP DISTURBANCES:
Cortisol production follows a curve from highest levels around 8am,
dropping throughout the day until the lowest levels are reached about 11pm. In
early stages of adrenal fatigue the body compensates with high night time
cortisol. In this case the person finds it difficult to relax from the stress
of the day and has trouble going to sleep. High night-time cortisol results
in reduced REM sleep which is neither restful nor restorative. This can
lead to depression and reduced energy levels the next day. In later stages of
adrenal fatigue, the body may produce adrenaline (**fight or flight**
hormone) in an attempt to compensate for low cortisol. This too will result in
insomnia.

oDIZZINESS (POSTURAL HYPOTENSION):
When a person stands from a sitting or lying position, the systolic blood
pressure usually rises about 10 points as blood vessels in the lower body
constrict to force blood to the heart, lungs and brain. This is a result of
the action of epinephrine on the blood vessels. In people with adrenal
fatigue, the blood vessels are unable to respond to the release of epinephrine
because of lack of cortisol, so blood pools in the abdomen and pelvis and
blood pressure drops. This systolic drop ranges from 10 to 40 points and is
present in over 90% of those with hypoadrenia. Dizziness is usually present
on standing; however, in some people it is present intermittently or
constantly throughout the day as even resting blood pressure is low.
Paradoxically, in order to prevent pooling of blood in the abdomen and lower
extremities, the body may keep blood pressure extremely elevated. Pressure will still
drop when the person stands but only to around 150. Remember, it may have
been 180 or higher before standing. Treating the adrenals will lower blood
pressure whereas anti-hypertensives and diuretics will make the adrenal
problems worse in many cases.

oINFLAMMATION:
Cortisol and other glucocorticoids produced by the adrenal glands are the
body’s own anti-inflammatory hormones. People who have responded to
injections of corticosteroids into joints or to taking them orally are usually
those whose adrenal glands produce insufficient amounts of these hormones. Any
person who responds to corticosteroids should be checked for adrenal
fatigue.

oHYPOGLYCEMIA:
As adrenal fatigue progresses, blood glucose levels will tend to fall too
low. The body responds to hypoglycemia by causing the person to crave
anything that will rapidly raise blood sugar levels, such as a soda, candy bar,
a cup of coffee or even cigarettes. Often adrenal fatigue leads to the
abuse of alcohol, marijuana, and hard drugs because of the need to “fix”
recurrent hypoglycemia. Unfortunately, the rapid rise in blood glucose provided
by the “fix” only serves to start the whole cycle over.

oHEADACHES:
This is caused again by blood pooling in the abdomen and pelvis leading to
inadequate blood supply to the head.

oBEHAVIOR AND MEMORY PROBLEMS:
Cortisol even regulates the electrical activity of neurons in the brain
and thus influences behavior, mood and memory. Behavior changes frequently
occur in both excess and deficient cortisol levels. Sleep disorders for
example, are common with both high and low cortisol. Symptoms more closely
related to adrenal fatigue involve decreased tolerance (quick to anger),
decreased clarity of thought, poor memory and memory retrieval.

oSALT CRAVING:
The adrenal glands produce many more hormones than just glucocorticoids.
One very important hormone is aldosterone, a mineralocorticoid. Aldosterone
regulates fluid and electrolytes (sodium, chloride, potassium and
magnesium) in the blood, between and in the cells of the body. As adrenal fatigue
progresses, the production of aldosterone lessens. This causes
*salt-wasting*. As the salt is excreted by the kidneys, water follows leading to
electrolyte imbalance and dehydration. Those with adrenal fatigue should always add
salt (preferably sea salt with its trace minerals) to their water. Soft
drinks and electrolyte drinks like Gatorade are high in potassium and low in
sodium, the opposite of what someone with low cortisol needs. Commercial
electrolyte drinks are designed for those who produce high cortisol when
exercising, not for someone who produces little or no extra cortisol during
exercise. You need to add ¼ to 1 teaspoon of salt to a glass of water or eat
something salty to maintain fluid/electrolyte balance.

oEXCESSIVE THIRST AND URINATION:
A person with low aldosterone may also urinate 15 to 20 times a day and
drink excessive quantities of water. Unless salt is added to the water, the
fluid/electrolyte balance in the body is further disrupted.

oSWELLING:
As the body tries to keep the ratio of electrolytes and fluid balanced,
fluid may pour into the tissues and cause swelling. Most doctors will only
see the symptom and not the cause and prescribe a diuretic which further
compounds the dehydration and electrolyte imbalance and making the patient
worse.

oHEMORRHOIDS:
Hemorrhoids are basically varicose veins of the rectum and are caused by
blood pooling in the abdomen and pelvis. When a person presents with
hemorrhoids, it is usually do to adrenal fatigue, but can be caused by liver
congestion. Once again, listening to the heart can help determine the cause. If
the loud second sound is over the pulmonic valve, it is indicative of
adrenal problems, while a loud 2nd sound over the tricuspid valve is indicative
of liver congestion.

oVARICOSE VEINS:
Varicose veins of the lower extremities result from the same pooling of
blood in the abdomen and pelvis that causes hemorrhoids.

oINDIGESTION:
The same sluggish circulation in the abdomen can cause symptoms of
indigestion and poor absorption of nutrients.

oHYPERPIGMENTATION:
Although more often seen in actual Addison’s disease, hyperpigmentation is
occasionally seen in adrenal fatigue. This increased pigmentation of the
skin may show up as “bronzing” somewhere on the body or as unusual brown
patches.

oHEART SOUNDS:
The heart normally makes a “lub-dub sound, with the second sound being
much quieter than the first sound. In a person with hypoadrenia, the second
sound will be equal or louder than the first sound over the pulmonic valve.
When the body is stressed, it produces epinephrine which will cause
vasoconstriction throughout most of the body, including the lungs. This
vasoconstriction decreases the production of mucous in the airways. At the same time,
epinephrine will relax the bronchi (bronchodilation) allowing more air to
reach the lungs. In those with adrenal fatigue, the body cannot respond to
the epinephrine because of lack of cortisol so they experience
bronchoconstriction instead, leading to symptoms of asthma. The bronchoconstriction,
along with vasodilation and swelling of the mucous membranes create a back
pressure in pulmonary circulation (pulmonary hypertension) that causes the
pulmonary valve to slam shut, hence the accentuated second sound over the
pulmonic valve. Lung diseases such as tuberculosis or tumors can also cause this
loud 2nd sound.

The adrenal glands are very complex parts of the endocrine system
producing glucocorticoids (cortisol is the most important), mineralocorticoids
(aldosterone), epinephrine, norepinephrine and even sex hormones. Adrenal
fatigue affects every part of the body and every aspect of life. If you are
experiencing the symptoms described above it is imperative you find a
practitioner and get tested and treated. It may be helpful to print this out and
take it to your practitioner. Saliva cortisol testing usually includes the sex
hormones too and can be ordered from several on-line sites without a
doctor’s order. If you do it this way though, testing will not be covered by
insurance. Saliva testing is the most accurate test because it shows the rhythm
of cortisol production and because it shows how much cortisol is present
that the body can actually use. Blood tests only show bound cortisol which
gives no indication if that cortisol is actually available to enter the
tissues. Many people test *normal* on blood cortisol yet very low on saliva.

Coffee filters ...who knew! And you can buy 1,000 at the Dollar Tree for
almost nothing.

1. Cover bowls or dishes when cooking in the microwave - Coffee filters make
excellent covers.

2. Clean windows and mirrors - Coffee filters are lint-free so they’ll leave
windows sparkling.

3. Protect China - Separate your good dishes by putting a coffee filter
between each dish.

4. Filter broken cork from wine - If you break the cork when opening a wine
bottle, filter the wine through a coffee filter.

5. Protect a cast-iron skillet - Place a coffee filter in the skillet to
absorb moisture and prevent rust.

6. Apply shoe polish - Ball up a lint-free coffee filter.

7. Recycle frying oil - After frying, strain oil through a sieve lined with a
coffee filter.

8. Weigh chopped foods - Place chopped ingredients in a coffee filter on a
kitchen scale.

9. Hold tacos - Coffee filters make convenient wrappers for messy foods.

10. Stop the soil from leaking out of a plant pot - Line a plant pot with a
coffee filter to prevent
the soil from going through the drainage holes.

11. Prevent a Popsicle from dripping - Poke one or two holes as needed in a
coffee filter.

12. Do you think we used expensive strips to wax eyebrows? Use strips of
coffee filters instead.

13. Put a few in a plate and put your fried bacon, French fries, chicken
fingers, etc on them - Soaks out all the grease.

14. Keep in the bathroom - They make great “razor nick fixers.”

ED ANGER: HERE COME THE GARAGE SALE POLICE!
Posted on Monday, August 24th, 2009

I’m madder than church lady with a dirty doily!

So now the government is sending out special inspectors around the country, to check out church bazaars and yard sales. How come? Because you might be selling something “dangerous”!

No, not, like, pickle jars full of arsenic or live leftover shells from WWII. They mean… kids’ toys with teeny tiny parts!

It’s true: the government is starting to go after thrift shops, poking through all those stinky orange muumuus and dusty Readers Digests and chipped tea cups to see if anybody is selling “blacklisted” toys and other crap.

Hell, thrift shops are the only places anybody can afford to shop right now, and broke people are selling their stuff on their front lawns. But we can’t have THAT, can we? It looks way too much like unlicensed free enterprise and self-reliance!

I mean, it’s not like there’s a war or two on or anything, or a crappy economy or people dying of cancer. What’s really important is making sure your damn stupid kids don’t swallow Beanie Baby eyeballs!

The crappy products the government is hunting down are all from ten or twenty years ago and came from Chink-land or something. Well, if anyone’s enough of a traitor to buy all this Chi-Com garbage in the first place, they deserve to die for the crime of being un-American!

Think of it as a really slow motion firing squad, with lead paint instead of lead bullets!

I can’t believe we’re paying $100 million for this. Get off my lawn, Obama! You’ll have to pry my crochet pot holder from my cold dead hand!

Accusure Insulin Syringes [31G, 1/2 cc and 1 cc]

Audience: Patients with diabetes mellitus, pharmacists and diabetes healthcare professionals

Qualitest Pharmaceuticals and FDA notified patients and healthcare professionals of a voluntary nationwide recall of two lots of Accusure Insulin Syringes. The syringes in these lots have been found to have needles which can detach from the syringe. When the needle becomes detached from the syringe during use, it can become stuck in the insulin vial, push back into the syringe, or remain in the skin after an injection. Please note: I am looking to hold a rally to address this at the Russian embassy in Washington DC. Given that this is August and Labor Day weekend is following weekend - to get a decent turnout, we may have to wait to do this until one evening after work, perhaps Tuesday September 8, at 5 PM. If you know of people who could make this or you know anyone of Russian descent concerned about this issue in the DC area, please let me know.

Hell, thrift shops are the only places anybody can afford to shop right now, and broke people are selling their stuff on their front lawns. But we can’t have THAT, can we? It looks way too much like unlicensed free enterprise and self-reliance!<<<

There is a reason for this, it is not one that I like.

For the last couple years, Mothers have gone into the business of reselling clothing, in/on a larger scale than normal and a couple of the ladies that I have read about, were beginning to show a profit.

Instructions on finding and shopping, or setting up on their own shops were all over the young mothers groups and blogs.

So the gov brought out a whole bunch of new rules for children’s clothes, so gov’ed up that it is against the law for your child to wear last years clothing ....

And NOW Mom will need to buy more new clothes for the kids and less food.

Somehow, all the “liberals hate big business”, crap sure stinks of payola.

If a person is swapping and selling used anything, it is a good idea to keep it quiet.

And of course the gov wants it share of the taxes.

Does every one see where we are here?

We cannot buy used clothing or home grown food or get a job, unless we belong to the right political party.

And there went the middle class in America, right down the rats hole.

OK, you can have your soapbox back, this is my opinion.

“Comrade, did you get a passing score from the ‘party’ inspector?”

“If so, you get to eat today, it may be grass soup, but it will warm you up.”

Knowing what your rights are in the situation can be very helpful, and make a big difference in the outcome.

We all need to be more aware of our rights since Big Brother is in the government.

I was talking to a fellow conservative up here in the mountains today. He said he heard something about when someone got the government cash for a clunker, they had to sign a paper that said the government would have access to information about what they were driving, or something like that, with no end date! Can't remember the exact details since the guy didn't know them either. I told him about the part of the health care bill that gave the government access to our bank accounts! The socialists are taking over and many people aren't even noticing. Where is the ACLU when they can actually help with REAL violations of civil rights?

meal in a jar recipes

I think it would be helpful to collect meatless meal recipes using
basic food storage items we usually have on hand. It would be great
to have a few (or 52 or more) on the shelf. Here is one to try.

WHITE BEAN CHOWDER

(Put a copy of this recipe in the jar or bag.)

Great Northern beans
1 bag chicken bouillon granules/cubes
1 bag seasoning mix
1-14 ounce can diced tomatoes

To make soup:
Remove beans from bottle and rinse. Place in soup pot with
5 cups water and 1 tsp salt. Cover pan with lid and bring to a
boil, lower heat and simmer gently 5 minutes. Remove from heat
and leave covered. Let stand 30 minutes or more (up to 4 hours.
-—— OR -——
Soak beans overnight in cold water with salt added (I know..I know...
but salt helps to rehydrate beans and makes them taste better.)
Drain and rinse beans after soaking. Add 4 cups new water and
2 bouillon cubes or 2 tsp granules. Cover pan with lid and bring
to a boil, lower heat and simmer 1 hour or until beans are tender.
Stir occasionally.

When beans are done add the seasoning mix and tomatoes (to taste).
Simmer about 10 minutes. Adjust flavor by adding more water or
bouillon and pepper to taste. Makes about 2 quarts.

Optional: add 1-2 cups cubed ham

White Bean Chowder Mix

1 c. dried Great Northern beans

Place in baggie #1:
3 t. chicken bouillon granules OR 3 cubes, in baggie

Place in baggie #2:
2/3 c. potato pearls
2 T. imitation bacon bits
3 T. dried onions
1/2 t. sage
2 T. dried celery
2 T. dried carrots
1/4 t. pepper

Place beans in bottom of a pint bottle or zip-lock bag.
Put in packets #1 and #2 and close.

Oatmeal Sally Lunn
This is a delicious rich bread to serve with meals. I love batter
breads because they are so easy to make without the kneading. With
today’s modern appliances, kneading is a thing of the past, but I
remember sweating to the oldies while I kneaded batter for 5-10 loaves
at a time!

One of our favorite ways to eat this is toasted with butter and
homemade strawberry-blueberry jam (see the pectin box for freezer
strawberry jam and add 1 C. of blueberries - luscious!).

2-1/4 to 3 C. flour
1 C. rolled oats, either quick or old-fashioned
1/2 C. sugar
1 pkg. quick-rise yeast
1/2 tsp. salt
1/2 C. water
1/2 C. milk
1/2 C. butter, melted
3 eggs

Grease a 10” tube or Bundt pan.

Mix 1 C. of the flour with oats, sugar, yeast, and salt.

Heat the water, milk, and butter to about 120 degrees - “very warm.”
Add this to the dry ingredients and beat until smooth. Stir in enough
remaining flour to make a stiff batter.

Cover and let rise until doubled - if it is warm, this should take
about 40 minutes.

Stir the dough down and pour into the prepared pan. Cover and let rise
again until doubled, about 40 minutes.

Bake at 400 degrees 25-30 minutes, or until golden brown. Cool on a
wire rack about 5 minutes, turn out , and finish cooling on rack (we
love this HOT!).

Homemade Baking Powder Recipe
Royal Baking Powder was a single-acting product made years ago. Here’s
a recipe for single-acting baking powder you could use in old recipes
calling for Royal brand.
2 tablespoons cream of tartar
1 tablespoon baking soda
1 tablespoon cornstarch

Combine ingredients and store tightly covered. For double-acting
baking powder, use 1/4 teaspoon of baking soda and 1/2 teaspoon of
cream of tartar for each teaspoon needed.

Grandma’s Potato Biscuits

4 - 4 1/2 cups all-purpose flour, divided
1 package active dry yeast
1 Tbsp. sugar
1 1/2 tsp. salt
1 cup skim milk
3 Tbsp. vegetable shortening
1 cup unseasoned mashed potatoes, room temperature*
2 eggs
* Instant mashed potatoes may be substituted

In a large mixing bowl, combine 2 cups flour, yeast, sugar and salt;
mix well.
Heat milk and shortening until very warm (120-130 degrees);
shortening does not need to melt. Add flour to mixture. Add potatoes
and eggs. Blend at low speed until moistened, then beat 3 minutes at
medium speed. Gradually stir in enough remaining flour to make a
soft and slightly sticky dough. Knead 8 minutes by hand or with
dough hook.
Place dough in a lightly greased bowl, turning once to coat. Cover
and refrigerate at least 2 hours.
Turn dough out onto a lightly floured surface and roll or pat to 1/2-
inch thickness. Cut dough with a 2 1/2-inch biscuit cutter and place
on baking sheet lightly coated with cooking spray. Cover, let rise
in a warm (80ºF) place until doubled in size.
Bake in preheated 400 degrees oven 11 to 13 minutes or until golden.
Remove from pans and cool on wire rack or serve immediately.
Tip: Freeze unseasoned, leftover mashed potatoes in 1 cup portions.
Variation: Substitute 1 cup cooked, mashed sweet potatoes for white
potatoes and add 1 teaspoon grated orange peel.

Makes 20 golden, fluffy biscuits.

creamed corn

I haven’t tried this but this recipe comes from
“Cooking with Home Storage” by Peggy Layton.

10-12 pieces bacon cooked, 1/2 c chopped onion, 1/2 c
flour, 8 c milk, 2tsp salt, 1/2 tsp pepper, 1/2 tsp
celery salt, 2 c corn

Cook bacon, add onion and cook. Add flour to form a
ball. Then whip in the milk until it forms a thick
and smooth sauce. Add the corn and all other
ingredients to taste.

Although she doesn’t specifically mentioned dehyd corn
I would just boil the corn till it is as soft as you
like it and just add it to the recipe.

Might be worth dividing by 4 and trying a small batch?

Hubby eats a lot of instant oatmeal,<<<

To me it is all instant, put hot water on it, set a saucer over the bowl and and in 3 minutes, it is cooked.

I like the regular oats this way as I don’t like the mush kind.

Stir in your goodies and it is ready to eat by the time it is cool enough to do so.

So I bought mine in 20 pound bags.... talk about saving money, from Walton’s of course....LOL it is so fresh that I was actually eating it out of the bag.
