With that bunch it doesn't pay to rule out much.
“visiting with friends”, “swam to safety”, “wandered in a daze”....sheesh the local paper sure knew how to spin the BS back then didn’t they? A Kennedy staffer probably wrote the damn article for them.
One only can guess at how many phone calls were made to Kennedy family lawyers before he finally contacted police.
Well, it worked...he got away with it.
Actually it was heavily reported just not honestly. The real truth never got out until Damore’s book which should be required reading.
That book would never have happened if he hadn’t got one of the Kennedy family to talk.
Teddy was indeed guilty of manslaughter and officials in Massachusetts were guilty of criminal acts tho the local ones were just overwhelmed by the Kennedy fame.
On the other hand some rumors such as Mary Jo being pregnant or Kennedy purposely killing her were not true.
still more proof that it was really just a special effects coup in some lot in Hollywood.
The moon landing didn't save Teddy.The fact that a)he's a Kennedy,b)he's a RAT and c)this *is* Massachusetts,after all...are what saved him.
Some things never change.
And, oy, that's one lame story. "Uhh, yeah, that's it! I was wandering in a daze! For hours, yeah!
Mary Joe deserves a statue in Washington DC.
She saved us from a “President Ted Kennedy” didn’t she?
Another thought: If Congress tries to name any Health Care bill after Ted Kennedy, Republicans should offer Amendments to teach:
1.) CPR to victims who drive their cars off of bridges.
2.) How to call 911, after your car drives off of a bridge.
3.) How to walk into any fire stations or houses that you pass, on your way back to the Party, AFTER you drive your car off of a bridge.
4.) How to report an accident, after you do walk into the fire station, rather than just walk by the fire station.
The anniversary of the moon landing never goes by that I do not remember that it is the day she died.
Randy Bish did a great editorial comic about this today in the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review.
A few years ago there was a special about the first moon landing. Several clebs were interviewed about their memories of that event. Dennis Miller was one of them. He started talking about Mary Jo Kopechne and the lunar landing happening the same day. He said that here we have the biggest story ever in our history and now we have a competing story.
And a Kennedy was involved with both stories.
Day or two apart, actually. Mary Jo died late July 18th / early 19th. The moon landing was the 20th, with the EVA later that night.
But they are linked in my mind, too.
I wonder if that 69 Olds will be suddenly found and put up for sale in the near future?
It was a '67 Olds...referred to by Howie Carr,a long time Boston columnist, talk host and "student" of Teddy,as "the Rosemobile"...because it belonged to his mother,Rose.
Kennedy ordered his ‘67 Oldsmobile to be crunched up a la Goldfinger a few days after Mary Jo’s death. Her body was processed for burial before an autopsy could be performed.
Thirty years later, the bodies of his nephew JFK Jr and his young wife were ordered by Kennedy to be cremated before autopsies could be performed.
O you Massholes! O you wicked people who return Kennedy to power decade after decade.
How dare you nasal New Englanders inflict him upon the rest of us! Wicked people of a despised state!
Hey,wait a minute.I've never voted for an individual named "Kennedy" in my entire life.
Wicked people of a despised state!
Yes,the majority (large majority,I guess) of us are wicked. But not *all* of us.
It's amazing to me that I never even realized, until yesterday, that these two events happened within 48 hours of each other. No wonder not that many people were outraged about Teddy The Swimmer. They probably didn't even hear about it!
I was 16 at the time, and we were preparing for my Daddy's birthday, which was the same day as the moon landing, so I'm not sure if I remember hearing about Mary Jo Kopechne's death, when it happened.
If Teddy had managed to win the nomination in 1980, I don't think he would have stood a chance against Ronald Reagan.
Reportedly Nixon invited Kennedy to be there at Cape Canaveral in Florida for the Apollo 11 launch, in tribute to JFK’s role in setting the goal of getting a man to the moon, but Teddy turned down the invitation. If Teddy had gone there, Mary Jo would most likely still be alive today.
