When you eat steamed crabs are you a dipper, a swiper or a sauce-maker? A dipper removes the crab meat from the shell then drops it in a bowl of liquid, usually apple-cider vinegar or melted butter. A swiper rubs the crab meat quickly over the bits of seasoning clinging to the shell. A sauce-maker combines ingredients, usually mustard, mayonnaise and ketchup, then drags the crab meat through this creation. There is also another option: None of the above. That is, just eating the crab meat as soon as it pops out of the shell....

Well, anything tastes good in Alfredo!
Personally, I feel that the best way to enjoy seafood is raw. Only then can the true flavor of the animal’s flesh by discerned. Breading, sauces, etc. only overwhelm and mask the delicate flavors of fish and shellfish. In cases where cooking is necessary to make the flesh safe and/or digestible, the method used should be limited to the minimum necessary to render the food fit for table.
The reason so many people dislike the taste of fish and shellfish is that these foods must be absolutely fresh to be edible. If seafood has a “fishy” smell, it’s not fresh enough to be eaten, and unfortunately most parts of the U.S. are too far from the sea to make truly fresh seafood available at an affordable price. The best way to enjoy seafood is to not eat it unless you’re in a place where the fish/shellfish you’re eating were alive earlier in the same day — i.e. a coastal area. (Some restaurants and markets also have live seafood.)
If I can’t get fresh surf, I tend to stick to turf.
What a lovely prayer. Namaste!
Vegetarianism and conservatism can and does co-exist. You, me and a lot of other freepers are vegetarians or vegans.
However, part of conservatism is recognizing that other people may not share your beliefs and accepting that they don’t share your beliefs (Hear that, Huckabee?). A conservative will also find a gentle way of discourse when trying to show an opposing viewpoint, rather than getting into people’s faces. You’re giving the rest of us veggies a bad name.
BTW, you should try some seaweed flavored seitan and garlic margerine. It tastes a lot like crab and garlic butter.
That’s what I eat whenever I still have a hankering for seafood.
Nope. All shellfish require sauce. It may be cocktail sauce, it may be butter, it may be cream. But sauce is required!
Evidently you have never eaten blue crabs in Maryland.
Once in Baltimore. Not too impressed. They needed sauce. : )
heathen! =]
Dipper, although I prefer crab in Maryland crab cakes
I recently returned from a liesurely trip up the Virginia side and then down the Maryland side of the Chesapeke Bay. We had crab every day and once, twice a day.
The best crab was in Reed, Virginia...... Soft shell crab smothered in chunk crab meat.
Thanks for the vid, heh, heh!
Now google a vid that shows what happens when a crab is being crunched alive by an octopus or wolf eel. Not a pretty sight.
OTOH steamed crabs know neither fear nor pain.
“Hitler was a nonsmoking teetotalling vegetarian”
Loved that picture from the wharf. Spent many fine times there. Some of the best food around. On the east coast love some of the quaint places in Annapolis or Harris Crab House in Grasonville.
OK, I’ll concede your point that Hitler only cultivated an image as a pure ascetic who abstained from meat, alcohol, and tobacco in order magnify his Fuehrer mystique. Good historical lesson there. I had read Life magazines from the time and they were far too willing to take Nazi sources at face value.
But you now seem to be saying that only octopi and wolf eels have license to nosh on sentient living crabs simply because they’re animals and we’re not.
Arguments for veganism are usually advanced on both moral and pragmatic grounds. But what turns off most non-vegans is the overarching moral superiority claimed by vegans over meat eaters.
All I know is, is that crabs, like other animals were given unto Man for his nourishment and humane use. That alone is probably enough to send any vegan into orbit.
Oh.... I failed three times? Sure am glad I’m not the defendant in your courtroom.
