Actually it's really no different from intelligent men and women who overeat to the point where they seriously damage their health. They know they shouldn't, but natural biological drives often overpower rational thinking.

I know a number of African Americans that have very sound perspectives on most things--including the sanctity of life-- but they support Obortion simply because they see it as a victory for their race.
They're willing to support someone sho stands firmly against some of the values they claim are most important to them based on skin color.

The difference between him and your neighbor, though, is that in deciding to put his personal freedom and happiness first, he not only betrayed a loving family, he also betrayed those who supported him financially, gave his time and put their trust in him as a leader.
He's free to be just another cheating husband and poor role model for his sons in our culture.
Your defenses sound weak, however, in shrugging off the behavior when it comes from a someone who has sought support as a leader based not just on the ability to delegate but to have sound judgment, moral clarity and self-control.
He has shown he can't be trusted in those areas.

BIG difference between Clinton and Sanford. Clinton was clearly not “in love” with Monica. That relationship was pretty one sided.
Sanford was nuts in love with this other woman. Breaking it off is going to be like getting off crack cocaine. it is going to take a while. Focus is a concept that is going to be lost on him for a while.
He is in not mental condition to run anything.
For his own sake, he should just quit. End the death-spiral and get on with his life.
He is a politician and the mental makeup of this type of person makes them prone to such things.
Since we have allowed so much power to accrue to our Government the type of people who gravitate to political positions are narcissists. They want power and are VERY self centered and egotistical.
They are prone to not being true to their word in any arena of their endeavors.
They tend to be very similar to US women.
