PORTLAND, Ore. - Portland Mayor Sam Adams could lose two homes in north Portland after falling behind on his mortgage payments.
The homes in question sit side-by-side on North McClellan Street in the Kenton neighborhood and both are now in pre-foreclosure.
KATU obtained a copy of two notices of default against the properties, showing the mayor has not paid a mortgage payment on either home for five months. With late fees, that adds up to over $10,000 in back payments.
Adams said Tuesday his financial problems stemmed from the fact that he had to pay up front for legal bills in connection with an investigation into his relationship with Beau Breedlove. While two of his properties are now at risk, the mayor vows he will get caught up.
The news was all the buzz on talk radio on Tuesday, especially the Mark and Dave Show on 1190 KEX. Host Mark Mason said he does not feel sorry for the mayor, who earns a six-figure salary.
"It is tough to find sympathy for the mayor but still there's just something there that tells me it's sad," he said.
That's why they asked their listeners to pledge whatever they could to help out Adams. And while it may be just a radio stunt, they said Joe the Plumber netted over $1,300 in just one hour when he had financial problems.
Meanwhile, Oregon Attorney General John Kroger is trying to find out if Adams had a sexual relationship with Breedlove before the younger man was 18.
