The life story of a Black star in a White world, a man who arguably was the worlds greatest entertainer, will not be coming to a theater near you anytime soon. If ever.
During a recent interview on my radio program The Andrea Shea King Show, Hollywood conservative Burt Boyar, longtime friend and biographer of the late great Sammy Davis, Jr., said hes concerned that the true story about the talented entertainer who fought and broke through racial barriers will never be seen on the silver screen. Two years ago, Boyar had negotiated a deal to sell his two biographies to filmmakers who were all set to tell the story on celluloid.
What entanglements are keeping the former member of the Rat Packs compelling life from being made into a movie? A life studded with Tinseltowns glittering constellation of stars whose orbits intersected his? Luminaries like Sinatra, Peter Lawford, Joey Bishop, Dean Martin, Tony Curtis, Jerry Lewis, Liz and Burton, Paul Newman, Berle, Bacall, Bennett, Damone
when Hollywood was at its most glamorous?

Gimme a break.
No kidding. What about his friend, Frank Sinatra?
Hey, as long as they make a big deal out of the fact that Davis, like Jackie Robinson, like MLK, was a Republican, I would be happy to go see it.
I met and talked to him at Caesar's Palace in Vegas and he was kind enough to pose for pictures. I am 5'6” and scotched down a bit as he was so short!
Sammy got the scotch...
Here’s a wonderful example of Sinatra’s talent:

It was done relatively early in his career. I was amazed at how accomplished and multi-talented he was.
I was traveling yesterday and stopped at a D.Q. one of the young ladies, maybe 20 years old who was working there was quite short. Another customer, middle aged and should have known not to be so rude, asked her how tall she was. She answered him pleasantly enough that she was 4'9". I wanted her to ask him something personal, like, "how often do you brush your teeth" but she didn't.
I don’t know if he was the worlds best but I did see him one time in Reno. It was the most amazing show I have ever seen. He put 110% into every second he was on stage. I really enjoyed the show.
Sammy could act.
Frank could really act.
Sammy could sing.
Frank could sing.
Sammy could REALLY dance.
Frank could dance.
Sammy could do impressions.
Frank...Frank could sing.
I think Sammy wins. He simply had more talents than Frank and more often displayed them. Frank didn’t dance the last 35 years or so of his life, for instance. Sammy NEVER STOPPED doing everything he could do.
Mind you, I would have loved to have been able to take in the Rat Pack in Vegas back in the day. The idea of Sinatra, Martin, David, Bishop, et al. all being on the same stage in the same show is mind blowing.
On another subject, I also think that Bob Hope completely sucked as a comedian.
Just look at the threads on David Letterman. He is to be despised for his dirty remarks, but I see more posts calling his wife awful names because she is unattractive!
I just can't take the unnecessary meanness I am seeing now.
I won’t say he was the world’s greatest entertainer, but if you were to take the effort to review some of his work, you will certainly gain an intense appreciation for the immense talent that he possessed.
I suggest you begin with his two-disc set recorded on Labor Day 1964 “Sammy Davis, Jr. Live at the Sands”. A powerful presentation of his singing talents.
Of course, his widow, Altovese is absolute scum. She and the filth that she associates with will screw up any and all efforts to bring daylight to the legend of Sammy. They will litigate and sue until the end of time and they do not have the intelligence to bring the story to the screen.
Sammy’s daughter Tracy certainly does. But not with Altovese and her entourage sucking oxygen.
Jerry Lewis, Dean Martin?
Arguably means just that — you can argue that he is the best. It’s a matter of debate. Some say he is, others say he isn’t. Burt Boyar thought he was, and he was around ALL of them. So, he argues that Sammy was the best.
There you go!
You’re right. Altovese died in May 2009.
Is there anything that's subjective in nature that isn't "arguable"?
To say that he's the best entertainer is "arguable" is to say nothing at all.
My opinion of him wasn't very high but the people who paid to see and hear him evidently had a better opinion of him and he was very succesful, that's not very "arguable".
Thanks for the update. Perhaps Tracy can now move forward and make some effort to bring some long-overdue respect to Sammy.
