With all the toast, it sounds like you may be taking on more carbs than your body is using. Cut back on the breads, and go for breads made with long grains, not enriched/bleached flour when you do eat bread. Eat more earlier in the day ("Breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince and dinner like a pauper"). Avoid eating a lot in the late evenings before you go to bed, and as others here have indicated, drink water...apart from a cup of coffee or tea in the a.m., avoid sodas or other sweetened beverages.

I'll be 40 at the end of the month, and so far, I seem to be fairly holding my own :-)

God bless freepers ... I'm layed off ... no health insurance (visiting a doc is out)..

There's enough material here for me to at least make a dent in myself.

Seriously ...

Thank you all.

I am the opposite of you, a very, very tall guy (just shy of 7 feet), but I am a big guy, too (avid weightlifter -— started because I didn’t want to be a bean pole).

Your body does have a weight it will stay at.

It is your choice what you want that weight to be made from.

Your solution is two part: (1) become a weight lifter and (2) eat more protein.

I would recommend going to a real trainer, not some idiot who counts reps who will teach you how to safely do COMPOUND EXERCISES.

Compound exercises are:

Squat (front and back)
Deadlift (both stiff leg and traditional)
Bench Press (dumbell and barbell)
Row
Pull Up (and chin up -— to the chest)
Some sort of standing verticle press (could be clean and press from hang — if advanced — could be dumbell press)

Various kinds of ab work.

4 sets of 10-12 for you.

3 times a week

The work out should take an hour.

On off days walk about 40 minutes. Do it outside, brisk pace. If you are fit, do 100 yard sprints, walk back and repeat for 1/2 hour.

I am way past 40 and look like like a 20 year old who is comfortable at the beach. My teenage daughter’s friends say I am “hot,” much to my daughters’ disgust. This works.

You can’t out-train a crappy diet at your age, so here is what you have to do:

No booze for a while
Eat 1g of protein for every pound you weigh (this is a lot)
eat a lot of vegitables
Stay away from simple carbs (white bread, candy, soda, potatoes and pasta) and when you eat carbs, eat them in the AM.

Suppliments: fish oil, multi-vitamin.

In 90 days you will look completely different.

I’ve lost 45 lbs in the last two years. This is how I did it:

when you are hungry, eat a bag of Walmart microwave popcorn.
Eat about half of what you do now for your main meals.

Results:

-45 lbs ( at a good, healthy rate)
chinese-all-you-can-eat-buffets are no longer a good deal (sob).

It is just that easy.

Try Brummel and Brown's yogurt butter. A bit better for you, and it tastes better than butter in my humble opinion.

Get your thyroid checked. Can't hurt just to make sure everything is in line hormonally. Other than that, it's calories in vs calories burned. I dropped over a hundred pounds a few years back, so I know a little of what you are going through.

Cut the calories by moving from ‘breads’ and ‘butter’ to fruits and veggies.

This website gives allot of info on individual food items:

Yes.

One ounce of dietary fat results in several ounces of weight gain since body fat is mostly water.

Further, your diet consists solely of a stress inducer (coffee), and carbohydrates. This tells your body that you are starving to death, so it had better store up as much energy as possible. The result of your all-carb diet is depression. That’s probably why you drink so much coffee.

Skip the toast and eat meat. Also make a real strong habit of recording your snacks. I’d bet you’ll eat more than you think. Don’t even worry about stopping eating whatever snacks you eat. If you aren’t aware of what you eat, you won’t have the will power to stop eating it. Just become aware. Once you are aware, you can make a decision what you’re willing to give up. But you can’t give up a subliminal habit.

Don’t diet so that you feel deprived. Diets just train your body to consume less fuel. The brilliance about the Atkins diet was that you could eat all you want, you just can’t eat carbs. The real weight loss comes when the dieter says, “if I see another piece of bacon, I’m going to hurl.” But it’s not just a gimmick: it’s the carbs that make you gain weight! But, like all diets, people want to return to what they know, and when they do, they’ll put the pounds back on.

Give up the coffee. If you are out of energy, try a vitamin supplement with plenty of B6 and magnesium. (Check the ingredients! Magnesium Oxide is a laxitive, not a source of dietary magnesium!)

And whatever you do, STAY AWAY FROM DIET SODA!

I’ve read lots of great suggestions here in this thread.

Do any of these weight loss schemes work by osmosis?

Knarf, I owned a fitness center for 15 years-

1. Getting in shape seems an overwhelmimg task- and after a few days w/o results, people give up. So, set yourself a goal of 3 weeks- 21 days of total committment to yourself come hell or high water. Don’t get on a scale, don’t touch a tape measure- just 21 days

2. Walk. Slow. Headphones- with a friend-family- a pet, on the beach- whatever. Try to make it pleasurable (sp)-if you can partner wt some one or different people- all the better. But, I’m talking an hour a day- even if you have to break it up.

3. Set out your food each morning- whatever you determine your calorie level- that’s all you get. 21 days.

At the end of 21 days, you will not lose all the weight you want. But, you will see progress, you will see that you can lose, you will feel better-— and that will keep you going for the next 21 days.

You can devote 21 days to yourself, can’t you man?- :)

I know you can do it- you’re God’s child. Start Sunday May 10- say a prayer on the Sabbath for strength - and by June 1, you’ll feel a new man. Good luck.

Vin

Your body needs food like a car needs gas. You have to eat small 6 or 7 meals a day. Just remember 3500 calories is equal to 1 lb.

You also need to sign up for a gym membership. Spend 1/2 hour a day to speed up your heart rate by lifting light weights or walking. It will help you in the long run.

I train a lot of clients at the gym so if you need help let me know.

All the best to you in your efforts. And now you know you have a solid support group of caring folks that are willing to offer up some good advice.

And to everyone else, I’m really surprised no one’s suggested the Alpo diet yet. :)

Dangus, explain the no diet soda thing please. I drink it some, though I’ve cut my intake of carbonated beverages by at least 50% in the past year. Maybe you can inspire me to cut it the rest of the way.

Thanks.

I'll get 'em off the hook ... I already tried it.

My favorite is the Milk Bone slathered with peanut butter and washed down with a tall, cold glass of farm milk.

(In my best Sherriff Andy Taylor .. )

Mmmmm-M! ... Cain't be beat!
