Discussion Topic: Grizzly Plan Could Deny Hunter Access
From an AP story in the Billings Gazette:
Hundreds of miles of backcountry roads used by outdoor enthusiasts would be closed under a new federal plan to protect grizzly bears in the Selkirk and Cabinet mountains that stretch from northeastern Washington to northwestern Montana. . . .
The new environmental impact statement is the result of a decade of lawsuits by environmental groups that contend encounters with humans are a main cause of grizzly deaths. The bears are listed as a threatened species . . . .
The new plan covers 4,560 square miles of the Selkirk and Cabinet mountains and would close roads to hunters, berry pickers and other users.

This is surprising because the Greens usually they only deny access to cars, motorcycles, and ATVs. Now the humble backpacker will be restricted from all these no-go areas.
This is truly nuts.

This land grab is being "justified" by grizzlies. I heard another one is underway with "sensitive lynx habitat" that targets 39,000 square miles of back country. All the follows the recent land grab in western states that was "crafted" from a mix of over 100 separate proposals.

BTW, the "lynx habitat" effort is designed to exclude users of snowmobiles from 39,000 square miles of back country.
