2,000 for you!

Ash came back in to supervise lunch; now Shannon’s stalking bugs. Bill *really* needs to mow the lawn!

Ash went galumphing upstairs. I hope she doesn’t scare Wednesday!

We have Sunday School this afternoon, and I’m thawing some kind of beef-dish leftovers that I found when I was cleaning up the freezer yesterday. It must be one of DP’s 20-serving creations, since I rarely make beef-anything.

LOL!

I’ll have to see what I can find in my freezer.
When my daughter came over on Saturday, she brought me four boxes of Thin Mints. Mmmmmmm!

We still have some cookies in the van, but no chocolate ones!

I’ve gotten to where I pretty much like all the GS Cookies.

Some flavors took some getting used to, but they are all good.

Still... Thin Mints are the best! And I don’t like mint! LOL!

Nylabones, like deer/elk antlers, have the advantage of having no odor to speak of. You can't put them in the dishwasher but you can give them a good scrub by hand.

They are manufactured chews with a non-nutritive substrate full of small nylon fibers that massage the gums and clean the teeth as the dog chews. They make a lot of different products, but the durable chews are the ones I use because Labs are VERY powerful chewers with long jaws that develop a lot of leverage. Nylabone durable chews. You want to get them big enough so that the dog gnaws sideways and doesn't crunch straight down.

Deer or elk antlers are a good alternative, especially if you have a friend who hunts or has land that deer live on - they shed their antlers after the rut and you can just walk around and pick them up. We have a friend with 100 acres in a rural GA county, he saves the ones he finds when he's out hunting, and when we go down to shoot on his land we scrounge them up ourselves. Some people train their dogs to hunt for them!

I use the thick base of the antlers and saw off the pointy bits just with an ordinary hand hack saw. The dogs dance around the workbench waiting for me to hand them the goodies!

The antlers sound pretty icky, but we’ll look into Nylabone chews. Ash makes a real mess with the rawhide ones.

Why are the antlers icky? They are just a specialized type of bone, but with no flesh on them to rot or smell. Deer antlers are covered with 'velvet' when they first grow out, but that is long gone by the time they shed.

Antlers have no odor and when the dogs chew on them they simply grind down into a white powdery substance that disappears into our carpet (I suppose you could vacuum it up but it's invisible, at least on OUR carpets . . . < eeeek! >)

We throw them away when they get small enough that a dog could choke on them (we do the same with the nylabones).

Chunks and pieces of the rawhide chews can get stuck in the intestines. The Nylabones are much better for dogs.

I didn't realise how many people were SELLING these things -- I just googled "deer antlers" and "dog chews" and got dozens of different websites, some selling them in bulk.

FWIW, my vet says that ANYthing can get stuck in a dog (and given that we have Labradors, almost anything will!)

She says as long as the rawhides are an appropriate size and you throw the small bits away, there's really no problem. Although some dogs seem to have an allergic reaction to them.

It’s just the thought. And the boys would never let me hear the end of it ... rawhide “bones” are fascinating enough!
