I am tickled pink.

But I'm not a really good player -- I studied piano through high school, and I love Renaissance music, especially English Renaissance -- but I don't have the real talent and I don't practice enough (mostly, I don't practice enough!!!!)

But I love having the choir parties at my house, because we get the music director to sit down at the harpsichord and he just plays and plays . . . from memory. Then he asks what I have in the house, and I get out Lady Nevelle's Book or Parthenia or the Goldberg Variations, and he just plays and plays some more . . . . we never get tired of listening to him play.

I know how that goes! In Barbershop Harmony, it’s called “the afterglow,” though sometimes, it doesn’t need to be after something.

I’ve had music lessons during all my school years, but I never had much talent. I can sing (tenor) but all I can sing is strong. There is no quality to my voice.

As an adult, I took piano lessons, and I would like to have a keyboard, now, but...

Anyway, I can still tune a violin!

It's a much more delicate sound, but where you really notice it is in the touch. Something like a Zuckerman has a very heavy mechanism and it plays like a piano. There is nothing to the action of a 'real' harpsichord but the key, a very lightweight 'jack' (just a strip of wood with a damper at the top - it is half the width of a popsicle stick and just about the same length) and a horn (or in my case plastic) plectrum (a tiny pick) mounted sideways in the jack. You can feel the string through the action, and the response is instant and so is the return. You can throw off trills and ornaments at a speed that is impossible on a piano - even a good one.

They invented the heavies for a big concert hall, because a 'real' harpsichord is not a concert hall instrument.

It works great in a small chamber ensemble, and in a nice reverberant room (a small to medium parish church with good acoustics is ideal).

Radio Shack has keyboards for next to nothing. You can hammer out a real deal on a floor demo if you catch them at the right time. We got one for my mom for less than a hundred bucks - a discontinued model and a demo to boot. They needed the space, apparently (and my husband LOVES to bargain).

It isn't a Bosendorfer, but what the heck, it makes music!

I have a bawling tenor myself -- but our choirmaster has been working on my head voice and upper range, and that has really helped open out and refine it. Even my tenor range has become more listenable . . . . we were way down in the country today and went to the only Catholic parish in Coweta County, so I got to sing in the congregation instead of the choir. I had a ball, even though it was all Marty Haugen/David Haas dreck. (But why don't Catholic congregations SING, for heaven's sake? The Good Book says, 'make a joyful noise', it doesn't say anything about being able to carry a tune!)

Percussion? Bagpipes? Pennywhistle? (my husband is a virtuoso on the pennywhistle). Just try stuff out when you get the chance, and listen - listen - listen to all the music you can.
