What do you get if you divide science by God?

A prize-winning quantum physicist says a spiritual reality is veiled from us, and science offers a glimpse behind that veil. So how do scientists investigating the fundamental nature of the universe assess any role of God, asks Mark Vernon.

The Templeton Prize, awarded for contributions to "affirming life's spiritual dimension", has been won by French physicist Bernard d'Espagnat, who has worked on quantum physics with some of the most famous names in modern science....D'Espagnat worked with Wheeler, though he himself reckons quantum theory suggests something different. For him, quantum physics shows us that reality is ultimately "veiled" from us.

The equations and predictions of the science, super-accurate though they are, offer us only a glimpse behind that veil. Moreover, that hidden reality is, in some sense, divine. Along with some philosophers, he has called it "Being"...

“What do you get if you divide science by God?”

Infinity, of course! ;-)

As Einstein said, “God is a mathematician.”

This is the comment I posted to their question as to where I stand. They may or may not publish it. Either way I decided to post my comment here for others to read.

I stand with the believer, John Polkinghorne and I come to this conclusion through faith,. However I do have a mind that has been given the ability to think on a level with God if only I allow myself to put the silly notions of men aside. One silly notion is that reality only exists within the dimension of what we can see, touch, smell, and taste, anotherwords our whole existance is based upon our four senses. But then we toatally ignore the reality that science proves that a spirit world we can not imagine can exist.

Consider for a moment, how much more space is in an atom than solid matter, in fact there is some 30,000 times more space than there is mass. A hydrogen atom made up of one proton and a single orbiting electron is a perfect example of the enormous amount of space in an atom. If you could enlarge the proton of a hydrogen atom to the size of a baseball, the electron of that atom would be about the size of a BB rotating around the proton ten miles away at the speed of 10,000 miles a second.

If the earth were a proton and the moon an electron and the space between them had the same ratio as exists in a hydrogen atom the moon would be 1,000 times farther away then it is now. Think of it this way, if all the atoms in your body should suddenly collapse, leaving no space between the solid matter, we would need a very powerful microscope to find you. You would in essence be a microscopic speck of dust, but you would still weigh exactly what you do now.

We know there are dwarf stars whose density is much greater than that of atoms on earth. There is a star of the first magnitude called Sirius also called the, “ Dog Star”, in 1888 they discovered it was actually a double star. The smaller of the two stars is called Sirius B also referred to as, “A pup”. This pup is a dwarf star that rotates around the major star. The density of this pup is thought to be so great that one cubic inch of Sirius B would weigh 1,700 pounds by earth’s gravitational standards. By comparison a neutron star is about a million times denser than these dwarf stars are. One cubic inch of a neutron star would weigh 1.75 billion pounds. And still there is space in that cubic inch.

Knowing there is so much space in an atom, many experts in the field of atomic energy have said it is theoretically possible for two worlds to coexist at the same time in the same space, both passing through the other, unaware of the other’s existence. All it takes is for them to be made up of different molecular structures.

For the believer, there has always been a spiritual world, but not until God spoke the universe into existence was there two coexisting yet separate worlds. Even those who refuse to admit that God exist leave open the possibility that there is a spiritual world. From ancient times various pagan religions consisted of beings from a coexisting but separate world that would from time to time interact with mortals of this world.

As a Christian, I believe Christianity is the only religion whose very core consists of its very God entering mans world and living in a mortal body to experience punishment and death to save man from his sins. Through His death and ultimate resurrection we now have the chance to actually live in His spiritual world for eternity. It is facts like these that make for honest scientist who are willing to look at all the evidence to believe in God and many accept Christ as their Savior and King.

It is this parallel spirit world that I believe is populated by God and His angels who have visited men from time to time throughout history.

I recall one of my favorite cartoons, shows two scientist at a blackboard full of equations, in the middle it says (and I paraphrase) “And something happens here” and then the equation goes on to fill the board.

I've usually seen it as: "Here a miracle occurs". ;-)

I like your comments. I agree that science does prove a spirit world, in spite of the numerous claims I have read saying otherwise.

I actually took that from an article I wrote for my church. It is a theological paper I wrote for some of my fellow brothers at church. I didn't want to bore anyone so I just took a portion of it for my comment here.

Let me know if you would like to read the whole thing and I will Freep Mail it to you.
