A little known odd fact about the history of Old Glory, is her sister, the forgotten Civil Flag of the United States.
The existence of the first U.S. civil flag came about in 1767 when members of the "Sons of Liberty" rebelled against the Stamp Act by turning the flag of the British East India Company on its side and then flew it on the "Liberty Tree...
Looks like the flag from Jericho...
It might be time to dust it off and breathe new life into it. If not now, then probably pretty close.
It is also the Treasury flag, IIRC.
It is also the Treasury flag, IIRC.
Of course, the article is from one of those “courts have no jurisdiction because they’re flying the admiralty flag with the gold fringe” websites, so....
Courtesy of the Wayback Machine, here's a lengthy article from the Treasury.
This page, by a private individual, does a pretty good job of debunking the "Civil Flag" myth.

Thanks for the ping, but this is nonsense. The Great Seal did not exist until 1789. And the flag of the Sons of Liberty had 13 horizontal red stripes on a white background. This thread is all bogus and should be pulled.
thanks Pharmboy.

The Great Seal was first used publicly in 1782.
And I stand corrected on the Great Seal...as you say, the first depiction was in September, 1782, although it was described earlier that year.
I was mistaken since I thought the first depiction was over the Washington family pew in St. Paul's Chapel (Episcopal) in NYC (April, 1789). This is where The General worshiped for the first 15 months as POTUS.
Thanks for the follow-up, SC.
I wonder if that photo I linked above had the Great Seal added later (but still in the 18th century)?
Well, after 1782, it might have existed...hard to know.
