"The rankings were determined using 50 of the largest metropolitan areas as defined by the United States Census Bureau, which includes a central city and the surrounding county (or counties). Each metro area received a manliness rating between 0 and 100 based on how well it performed in each of the study's manly categories. Factors used to determine the manliest city rankings included the number of U.S.-made cars driven in the city, number of sports bars and BBQ restaurants, number of home improvement and hardware stores as well as manly salty snacks consumption. All data was adjusted by the current population of the cities to arrive at "per capita" figures, providing an accurate comparison between cities of varying sizes."

No surprise that DC is #45. I spend most of my time between DC and CA, no wonder there’s a shortage of real men, lol.
We’re #1.
I'm sure San Francisco has more than its share of home improvement stores. Sports bars, too. The "manly salted snacks" thing is, I think, best left uncommented upon.
Ah, look at those bastions of liberalism holding up the rear.
No pun intended.
That’s cause we forgot to play along...
Seadrift Texas, “Sleepy little Drinking town with a Fishing problem”
How in god’s name does salty food consumption, BBQ rib eating or driving foreign cars make you a “man”? A man is simply somebody that can take no $%#@ from anybody and have the balls to defend himself and his family.
And as a side note:
18. Minneapolis, Minn.
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH! They must have surveyed all of Saint Paul and made the common mistake of calling it all “Minneapolis”. I live in Minneapolis. Everybody here rides John Kerry bikes and drinks Appletinis.
Appletinis? heheh.
I think it has to do with a popular perception in America as to what constitutes a "man's man". I have 4 brothers and most of them are what I consider to be a "man's man". They love hunting, fishing, eating BBQ, pizza, beer, watching sports, playing sports, driving big cars, and voting Republican, lol...I love these things about them, even though I am so different. Spending a lot of time in CA reformed my eating habits and lifestyle...I talk to them about it all the time, like eating less red meat, more whole grains, drinking more water, eating organic food, etc., but they don't listen. I am hoping when we all get older it will change!
Huh. Can't imagine why.
Oh, c’mon, give ‘em some credit. It takes real talent to drink an Appletini while having a large stalk of celery shoved up your ass.
Lots of stores like this.

Ooooo...poor showing from New England.
That’s no surprise, is it?
Not at all...my wife just pointed out something else that makes Tennessee a ‘manly area’...courtesy toward women. You know that outdated chauvinist stuff; holding doors open for a woman, removing your hat in a restaurant, yielding your seat to a lady on public transportation...all that ‘forgotten 50’s crap’... :-)
Cheyenne or Laramie, Odessa or Lubbock would probably beat all of them, but they weren't big enough to be considered.
Out on the plains guys are so manly they don't need or want "sports bars" or "hearty, pretzel and cracker snack made with real cheese."
Minneapolis should rank just below Chicago. Sad to see Houston down as low as 39th place, used to live there. It was however getting a lot of metrosexual types when I left. But then there is always Pasedena and Deer Park to counterbalance.
Hey, that's where Cpl. Max Klinger is from!
... oh, waitaminute ...
