Why Obama Wants Control of the Census
The Wall Street Journal ^ | February 10, 2009 | John Fund

Posted on 02/10/2009 2:01:27 AM PST by Scanian

President Obama said in his inaugural address that he planned to "restore science to its rightful place" in government. That's a worthy goal. But statisticians at the Commerce Department didn't think it would mean having the director of next year's Census report directly to the White House rather than to the Commerce secretary, as is customary. "There's only one reason to have that high level of White House involvement," a career professional at the Census Bureau tells me. "And it's called politics, not science."

The decision was made last week after California Rep. Barbara Lee, chair of the Congressional Black Caucus, and Hispanic groups complained to the White House that Judd Gregg, the Republican senator from New Hampshire slated to head Commerce, couldn't be trusted to conduct a complete Census. The National Association of Latino Officials said it had "serious questions about his willingness to ensure that the 2010 Census produces the most accurate possible count."

Anything that threatens the integrity of the Census has profound implications. Not only is it the basis for congressional redistricting, it provides the raw data by which government spending is allocated on everything from roads to schools.

.
Another screw up, appointing a Republican who can’t be trusted, how many mulligans does a inexperienced liberal Senator playing President need? MSDNC?

If Senator Gregg was set up by obama he should do the decent thing and immediately resign. If he agreed with Obama in advance that his Cabinet level chair would be compromised by the removal of this traditional responsibility, he should do the decent thing and resign, repent, and beg forgiveness.

Can’t believe that John Fund didn’t hit the truly significant point of the major red states bleeding population. California, New York and Michigan among the biggest losers.

It isn’t about gerrymandering, it is about losing entire districts in the House of Representatives with attendant gains in the receiving states.

more blasted dem fearmongering. Of course republicans can't be trusted -they've been saying it for going on nine years now, right? The same excuse was used for trying to ramrod a bailout bill thru with martial law and it's their excuse for trying to ramrod a 'stimulus' pork bill thru, too. For a decade it's been their mantra. Republicans trying to be all polite and squishy softy and 'let's get along', don't challenge these hatemongering statements when they should be met head-on imo jmo moo.

BO wants control so that in the next election when ACORN set out to rig things there won’t be more voter showing up to vote than registered voters in any given state.

Concurring bump, Gregg should bail on this shambles and go nuclear on the Obamarrhoids.

[Article] Anything that threatens the integrity of the Census has profound implications.

There's a constitutional and procedural fix for that. Filibuster the Census -- defund it, and let the Obamarrhoids twist in the wind while they try to justify grubbing up public funding for their nationwide gerrymander.

That'll teach Obama and Rahm to screw with us.

Oh, and in case Rahm thinks he can bend Susan and Olympia over his desk again, there's a cure for that, too. Go find some Blue Dogs from States that would get screwed by Rahm's "rahmamander" plans, and get them to help filibuster. Who says you can't "reach across the aisle"?

Yes, "science." Obama is talking about "scientific socialism."

Yeah, sure.

That's why they wanted to know how many toilets you have and a boatload of other personal data in the last census. I suspect very soon the questioning (and that's what it is) will include necessary information like: how many firearms you own, what type, religious affiliation, political persuasion, homeschool status, associations, personal contacts, etc., etc., etc.

A dossier needs data to be effective, ya' know.

You mean, like acknowledging once again that a fertilized egg is a unique human being? Nah, didn't think so.

I am confident that the methods that will soon be used to hinder our movement from state to state are already on the drawing board, and that is one reason the “White” House wants control of the census.

Screw up? He convinced a Republican to leave a Senate seat, had him replaced with a rookie who is likely to be replaced with a Democrat at the first opportunity and then took away the most important power Gregg was likely to have. That was a billiant move. He marched into the Rhineland and we will do nothing about it.

"Anything that threatens the integrity of the Census has profound implications."

I seem to recall that in the 2000 census, the libs wanted several controversial things that both threatened the integrity of the census. They received one but not the other:

They wanted no distinction between citizens, residents, and illegal aliens. Millions of dollars were spent on advertising assuring illegals that census takers would not turn them in, to ensure that the illegals answered the door. Libs succeeded here.

Libs wanted computerized adjustment of totals in certain districts in the event that doors weren't answered. Talk about "integrity" ! But I think they lost this one.

Don't trust this initiative for a second.

I do remember that. It created a public outcry, as this new scam should.
