Homeowners here would have to create 30-foot firebreaks around their houses clear of trees and brush under a wildfire-protection ordinance being proposed by town officials.
The efforts are intended to prevent spread of fire and allow for safe evacuation for residents and safe access for firefighters.
Town staff members and the Red, White and Blue Fire Protection District are working with the Colorado State Forest Service to develop a map designating the areas
Within the proposed 30-foot firebreak, trees and vegetation that are well-spaced, well-pruned and unlikely to spread fire to other vegetation and structures may be exempt from cutting, according to the draft.
The ordinance also would require property owners to reduce fuels up to 75 feet away from structures.

Nice, descriptive headline, suggesting that John Edwards has proposed a new Strategic Defense Initiative. ;)
—better let them do it there around the Dillon Dam, too—
Now that so many newspapers have sites on the internet, I wish they would start identifying what state or country that they’re in on their sites names.
There’s a hundred “Clarksville’s” or “Columbia’s” out there and it would be nice to know which state or country they’re talking about.
Maybe it’s just me.......
P.S., It’s Breckenridge, CO.
Is this a small area or all of Colorado?
looks like just that area.
This county is hit hard because there are so many liberals there .
Now the reality is so severe that a few adults are pushing for defensible spaces near homes and towns that this is finally coming forward.
The second issue of a healthy forest is also making some headway.
Both in Summit County and all over the state.
Other western states have these two issues, too.
I live up in the mountains and we have many hundreds of trees on our property. We do try to keep them trimmed and haul away the fire hazards, however, a huge fire almost wiped us out a few years ago, the disaster was STARTED by a woman who worked for the Forest Service. Those people are the real danger to our forests and wildlife.
USFS arsonist Terry Barton ?

No, it’s not just you. I notice some Freepers include the state in their heading, and I thank them.
Otherwise, I’ve had to search at times through the ads in the newspaper hoping for some clue as to what state is involved. It’s such a waste of Freepers’ time.
The damn WEEDS fight every attempt to do logging to help fire suppression. They think it harms Grizzly habitat.
Montana, Idaho, and Washington had one of the world's worst forest fires in 1810, the Big Burn - 3 million acres.
I'd say were heading for another with a much higher death toll because of the stupidity of the WEEDS!
Correction: The Big Burn was in 1910. Sorry.
It amazes me that all areas don’t have common sense ordinances such as this. This proposal is almost identical to the ordinance Los Angeles county has had for nearly fifty years, it was enacted due to the Bel-Air fire. It not only protects structures but protects the brush and forestland in the event of structure fires.
It must be illegal, since very few ID their city or state. Bugs me, too.
It they want to live in a forest, they have to cut the forest down to make it safe.
