The 'cat's eyes' laser that can help British troops pinpoint a sniper before he pulls the trigger

Snipers or assassins could be spotted in their nests before even firing a shot thanks to laser surveillance technology to be unveiled in Britain.

European and U.S. companies are accelerating research into anti-sniper defences in response to threats in Afghanistan and Iraq and at home.

But most systems use acoustic or thermal sensors that depend on waiting for the first shot.

An alternative developed by the European aerospace group EADS aims to warn of attack and pinpoint the sniper before he pulls the trigger by bouncing light off his telescopic sight.

'It is the same principle as 'cat's eyes' in the middle of the road,' said Peter Talbot-Jones, research team leader at EADS Innovation Works at Newport in Wales.

'Cat's eyes' behave like the retina of a cat by reflecting light from a car's headlamps to illuminate lines on the road.

No biggie, I can hit a 1sqft target at 1000m using open sights on my M1 Garand (learned to do it when I was in the Navy). Just have to know the ballistics of your round, how to judge and adjust for windage and elevation, and have a steady firing posture, and a decently accurate weapon.

Scopes are nice, but you shouldn't rely on them all of the time.

You would never have them in the quantities neccessary to turn the tide, and those that you did have would quickly be eliminated. Remember, the taliban used to have tanks and heavy artillery, thats gone now, because its impossible to utilise and conceal them against a western army...

Did you read what I said about the revolutionary war?

Thats one hell of a prejudicial assumption you’re making that all the people on the government’s side are going to be useless, city-dwelling, dole claiming incompetents. Fact is, there will always be a sizable chunk of the population that will take the view that you are terrorists and traitors and thus side with the government. That’s how it worked out in the revolutionary war.
And by the way, during the American Civil War, there were plenty of US soldiers who were prepared to smite rebellious citizens fighting against a tyrannical federal government that was exceeding its remit and had introduced outrageous violations like the suspension of habeus corpus and conscription, which affected not just the south, but also the North. Particularly in New York City during the draft riots in 1863...

They used .308 and 30.06 in WWII. Much different mindset before the M-16 was manufactured.

You make my point. The military may have switched to poodle-shooters, but there are a whole lot of 30 caliber rifles still in the hands of ordinary citizens who can shott with iron sights.

Well, if you are not even prepared to engage with my argument, it doesn’t say much about viability of your opinion does it? Oh well, your loss....

Even sadder are Americans who think American soldiers will happily kill Americans for a paycheck. To me that shows a real lack of respect for our men and women in uniform.

It sounds like you are describing our unionized, militarized “law enforcement” agencies, the “standing army” our Founders feared.

One of my neighbors is a cop. He’s a good man and a great American.

I forget -- how did that turn out? Did the ruling government beat the insurgents?

You Brits still don't get us, do you? All of your arguments are exceptionally weak and show that you don't know what you're talking about.

My best friend is a former cop.

My point remains that if anyone is going to break into your house at 3AM to take your guns, kill your pets, and burn your house down if you don’t comply, it’s won’t be the Army, Navy, Air Force or Marines. It’ll be SWAT, ATF, DEA, etc. They have a proven track record enforcing unconstitutional laws, so why should they stop when they’re Obama’s laws?

Essentially, we’ve established that the lady is a whore. We’re now just haggling over the price.

Yes, the revolutionaries won, thanks to the fact that the technological disparity between the two sides was not exactly great and the also fact that the French and to lesser extent the Spanish and the Dutch, provided crucial assistance with equipment and naval support, without which ultimate victory would have been nigh-on impossible.
You reckon any foreign government would dare to support you the against the US government the way the French did against the British?

As I understand it huge numbers of british loyalists were stripped of their property and evicted from the country during and after the war.

And as I said before, in the US Civil War, the insurgents lost, due to a distinct lack of foreign assistance and a somewhat greater disparity in technology and equipment available to them by that time....

During WWII, GM stamped out, yes stamped, millions of .45 handguns, IIRC, called the Liberator (or Liberty gun), that were dropped behind enemy lines.

The purpose was to supply the Underground. Now these were single shot (8 rounds supplied in the grip) guns that were not terribly accurate. But used in an ambush at point blank range could get a resistance fighter a German Mauser and or other military arms.

To think that resistance fighters would be limited to their own supplied arms, and not obtain more advanced military arms for their fight is nuts. And as far as this country is concerned; just who do you think thinks up all these toys for the military to play with?

If you think about it, civilians have been designing, building and operating UAV's for decades.

I won't deny the truth of that but the dynamic of the situation changes when you go from doing it to one house to doing it to all houses. Even my tiny 150 home town becomes a major news story if it were tried. The media might have sucess in painting us as militants for liberals but most of flyover country would recognize that they're next.

Insurgents haven’t been able to kill a great deal of coalition soldiers even with assault rifles, never mind crudely manufactured single-shot handguns. Also bearing in mind that German Landsers weren’t strapped up with the kinds of protective gear available to western soldiers nowadays.
Even assuming there are people who could churn out UAVs in factories unmolested by the US government forces, how long is all this great stuff going to last with all the sophisticated countermeasures available to government forces?
You can argue with me all day about this, but the fact is, last time their was an uprising against a tyrannical government by the citizenry, it got slapped, and the disparity between the toys available to the government is always going to be hugely imbalanced in their favour, more so now than at any previous point in history....

So, to sum up your “argument”: the South lost the Civil War about 150 years ago, therefore no attempted insurgency will ever succeed in the US. QED.

The Federal Government’s infringements of liberty far exceeded those of the Crown during the Revolutionary war, yet the ACW insurgency failed.
The disparity in technology that would be available to insurgents now compared to the Civil War is much greater. There would be no foreign help, not even of the kind were the likes of Britain and France were happy to trade in Cotton and build Ships for the Confederacy, so yes, There is prescious little chance of any insurgency succeeding against the US government. It is nothing more than a comforting fiction that many like to indulge in...
