1938 – THE YEAR IN REVIEW

A compilation by Homer_J_Simpson

Throughout 2008 we have spent time examining the history 1938. 1938 was a year of war, oppression and appeasement. Japan was continuing its conquests in China. Spain was still embroiled in its own civil war. The western powers of the time bent like reeds to the will of Adolf Hitler and his demands costing the sovereignty of Austria and the defanging of Czechoslovakia. Germany’s continued oppression of Jews hit an apex with the Kristallnacht and the SS released an internal document that hinted at what eventually would be called the “Final Solution”. But 1938 was more than just that. Great feats in aviation were still being made and still made big news with people like, Hughes and Corrigan making fantastic headlines. It was a year of entertainment with movies like ‘Boys Town’ and ‘Pygmalion’. It was a good year for the New York sports fan with the Giants and Yankees taking their respective championships.

Throughout this year Homer_J_Simpson has kept us all up to date and involved in the fascinating history that was very close to a day by day account of 1938. So for the final day of 2008 here are all of the articles compiled into one source for those who want a complete look at what the world was like 70 years ago. That makes you two sweet young things about the same age as my oldest sister. JustAmy, I see from your profile that your mother was born the same year as my father - 1913. At age 30 he was the old man of his infantry company in the Pacific. I will be posting some of his V-Mail letters home in a few years, assuming I am still at this business. I hope you both check in from time to time and give us the benefit of your wisdom and memory.

Please ping me to your Dad’s V-Mail. My Dad did not serve. He was also born in 1913. He had 3 kids and worked in the food industry at that time.

My husband never left the states. He was a tail gunner on a B17. When the bombs were dropped on Japan, he was a right scanner on a B29 preparing to head for the South Pacific.

I hope you didn't marry until after the war. I have heard of child brides but in your case it would have been literal.

By the way, what is a scanner? My uncle was navigator on a B-17 but I am not familiar with that job classification.

No, we were married in ‘57. Been 51 great years.

He says right scanners and left scanners were gunners. I’m assuming that when not involved in fighting they were expected to scan the skies for other aircraft .... both friend and foe.

What can I say. I got lazy in December. Honestly I thought that poster just worked there. The N.Y. Post Headline was my favorite too. Actually if you look really close you’ll notice the date on the paper is dated August 5th (which is when he got back to the states) but there was no way I couldn’t post that one.

Rose, my bithday is in August too, but I’m really the young buck of the group I guess. My father was born 8 days before the dropping of Little Man on Hiroshima and I was born 4 days before the 25th anniversary of the event.

I’ve always been interested in history and the events leading up to and through World War II has always been of specific interest to me. I had a grandparent in each theater with one of them being a nose gunner in B-24 Liberators in Europe and the other was a private in Murrell’s Muraders in the Pacific. Neither one of them talked about the war and infact I didn’t even know grandpa Jim was in the war until I had enlisted in the Air Force and he took me aside and showed me some pictures he had taken from the nose of the B-24. Aside from my father these two men were the greatest men I’ve ever known.

I really enjoyed putting together the compilation of Homer’s work along with contributing what I could find and what I know. I have also learned alot from the Freepers that have contributed to the threads. I’m certain that 1939 will be even busier for these threads and I hope to contribute and learn as much if not more than I’ve learned this year.
