I thought I had posted an article about Pastor Niemoeller early in the year, but I couldn’t find anything in the archives so perhaps I am mistaken. The WWI U-boat commander’s “de luxe” accommodations during his seven years in the care of the German security apparatus were in Sachsenhausen at first and later at Dachau. He survived the war and lived until 1984, when he died at age 92. Quite a tough character.
Today he is best known for a poem that is generally attributed to him.
"In Germany, they came first for the Communists, And I didn’t speak up because I wasn’t a Communist;
And then they came for the trade unionists, And I didn’t speak up because I wasn’t a trade unionist;
And then they came for the Jews, And I didn’t speak up because I wasn’t a Jew;
And then . . . they came for me . . . And by that time there was no one left to speak up."
I look forward to these posts every day. I can only wish they had a broader audience.

Do I read this correctly? Are they saying that in 1938, 12 (!!) aircraft carriers are considered of "importance almost equal to that of A battleship"?
Do the Brits really think they have 12 carriers to equal ONE battleship? And if the NY Times' syntax is just a bit garbled here, and they really mean to say, that EACH carrier "almost equals" a battleship, isn't that astonishing enough?
I had no idea the Brits had 12 carriers in service or building in 1938. You have to wonder, if they were "almost equal" to a battleship, why build so many?

According to a chart in Appendix F of Gathering Storm, At 9/3/39 the British had seven aircraft carriers operational and two under construction. That is more than I would have guessed but it is still a long way from twelve. Also, I would have expected battleships and carriers to be considered apples and oranges, as far as relative worth is concerned. Battleships were still considered the main offensive strikers while aircraft carriers were more of a useful innovation for ASW and support tasks.
The Arc Royal was commissioned only earlier this month too. I posted on that in the December 16th thread post #19. I have a link there that give more detail and a couple of post down there is a picture that isn't a little red x.
The article on Yugoslavia caught my eye (probably because I just finished reading “The Forgotten 500”) and I did some searching. I can’t find any record of the Italians turning over Zara (Zadar) to Yugoslavia. In fact I did find mention that the Itailians had 9,000 troops stationed there to help the Nazis take it over in ‘41 so I’m betting this deal did not go through.
Forgot to mention that Zara is an island about halfway down the Yugoslavia coast around the same parallel as Novegrad.

I'm glad you enjoy them. The audience is not too skimpy. They generally get at least 200-400 views. The one on Saturday is at 1,070 and counting. Anything involving tanks gets a lot of attention. I figure interest may build as 1939 moves along and the headlines become increasingly sensational. I find that the thread title is a major factor in attracting viewers. If I can arrange a thread that combines "Hitler," "tanks" and "scantily clad ladies" I will have a winner.
It seems that skiing into Trees etc is a generational thing for the Kennedys.

Benny Goodman has a regular gig at one of the local hotel showrooms so he will probably be performing too. Maybe bar hopping is in order. I should have included the weather forecast so we could plan better. Arrive early and hunker down for the night or park the roadster nearby and catch a set at the New Yorker and move on down the road.
Their propensity for injury on the ski slope must have been hereditary.
