As you probably know, Steve Jobs has apparently delivered his last Macworld Expo keynote speech. On the scale of highly anticipated events, Jobs' keynotes clearly beat Outbreak of World Peace and are closing in on a Beatles Reunion Tour (especially now that the band would consist of Paul, Ringo and Pete Best). So the anguished cry here at PC World's offices is "Why?" (Though, in fairness, we're probably not quite as anguished as our corporate cousins at IDG Expo, who produce the Macworld show.) Here are our attempts at an answer to the question of the day: Why did Steve abandon us?

Ping.
Some of the “Reasons” are pretty funny, like the one saying that Jobs couldn’t decide what to wear.
The comments are even funnier. They read like the OS wars here on FR!
On a more serious note, I think he’s not showing up because of his health. Investor confidence (and Apples stock price) would not take kindly to seeing a sickly Jobs at the expo. Rightly or wrongly, Apple is seen as very dependant on Jobs and if people think he’s not long for this world it will hurt the company greatly.

Reason 22: California just reached a 8.4% Jobsless rate...
While we’re talking about Apple here, just a quick word of warning. On a recent post we were told about a new way of phishing. It’s no longer just in emails. About two weeks ago, I got a popup notice on my emailer. It was an EXACT replica of what the emailer might do. It said, “The POP server “pop-server.(name of emailer).com” rejected the password for user (my name).
Please re-enter your password, or cancel.
[ ] Remember this password in my key chain.
Since I had read about this new method of phishing, I ignored it. But it was tempting because I’ve had trouble with the server where my email is concerned. A week later, I got the message again. I called my server, and was told, “We did not send it. We would never notify you that way.”
The intruders are getting REALLY SNEAKY. Just a warning for anyone else who might get a similar popup message from their servers.
He’s really pale, sick, and emaciated, and such a public appearance would obviously make Apple’s stock tank.
Hes really pale, sick, and emaciated, and such a public appearance would obviously make Apples stock tank even more than it has. (There, fixed it.)
Were those 18 reasons supposed to be funny?
It’s more simple. The company cannot be run on a cult of personality forever. Jobs will slowly withdraw his publicity to that of a regular CEO so his retirement will not create a public shock. Given that, I predict retirement within five years, since that would make for a nice, easy transition.
Remember how Apple fared when Jobs was in exile? Remember the Gil Amelio years of the 1990s?
In this case Jobs has been grooming people for takeover who can continue — and maybe even improve — the winning formula. Last time he was just kicked out.
Which browser?
“Which browser”
Safari 3.2.1
You said — “Safari 3.2.1”
Isn’t it obvious that it’s a browser window?. I mean, even if it is resized and even if the bookmarks bar, status bar, tab bar and toolbar are removed from the window, you still have the last remnant of the Safari window left — to recognize it as a Safari window and not an e-mail window (from the e-mail program).
And besides, if the e-mail program is not open and this comes up, then it’s obvious what is going on. And even if the e-mail window is open and that means you’ve already received e-mail, it would be questionable why this message is coming up *after* your password has already gone through...
This is a very ineffective way to get someone to enter in on a browser window (through a pop-up) some info that they never have to do normally. If that works for any of the phishers, it’s amazing that it does... LOL...
Thanks for the interesting info, ST.
My post was meant to warn users like myself who never had the school course on “IT language.” I believe your more complete explanation will be a further help to them.
