Mel Hein, kicked in the cheekbone at the end of the second quarter, suffered a concussion of the brain that left him temporarily bereft of his memory. He came to in the final quarter and finished the game.

Coach: “What’s your name?
Player: Who wants to know?

I bet none of those Giants players shot themselves in the leg at a club

Great job, Hein! We won the championship thanks to you! Here's your bonus, the whole $3.00! Now go get changed! No, no Hein, that's the ladies room! No, you're a man! Yes, you always have been! Okay, there ya go!"

Avg ticket price was less than $1.50. According to the inflation calculator what cost $1.50 in 1938 would cost $21.86 in 2007.

1928 champions: Providence Steam Roller

In 2008, New York had the Spitzer Steamroller.

Each Giant player was paid $504 for winning the game. According to the inflation calculator what cost $504 in 1938 would cost $7,346.55 in 2007.

According to nfl.com each winning team player gets a $73,000 bonus and a ring which according to the inflation calculator what costs $73,000 in 2007 would cost $5,008.06 back in 1938.

So, players’ take is a little more. Just a little bit. I’m not including takes for playoff games or bonuses in an individual player’s contract.

I don't know about that. The $4,500 difference would have been a big deal in '38. Look at the article about PGA tour money winners at the bottom. $5,008 would have been good for 9th place or thereabouts. Sam Snead's $19,039 makes him the all-time richest golfer.

Maybe this article shows we have de-emphasized one sport in favor of another sport. Or maybe, society did not find sports as important back then since there wasn’t as many professional associations. Or maybe the population has grown so more consumers require more professional sports and the market dictates salary growth.
