Carbonite, online backup - how good is it?
Posted on 12/06/2008 6:59:24 PM PST by EveningStar
Has anyone tried the online computer backup system Carbonite? If so, what do you think of it?
Doesn't Rush advertise it on his show?

Yes, Rush advertises it on his show. He says he personally uses it. It might also be advertised on his website.

We have it, but guess we won’t know how well it works unless we need it. . . hope we never do, though.

Absolutely the best money I have ever spent on computer related stuff. Saved my rear end last winter.

You let other people have copies of your sensitive data and store it online where people can hack into it? {boggle}

The files should be quite safe, provided they survive the freezing process, that is.

Carbonite has saved my butt several times. Works great. You even get notices if it hasn’t backed up in a week (I.e. your computer was turned off for a week)
Best money I’ve spent so far because it is completely reliable.
Go get it!

Some people don't think so. I clicked the link you offered, read the thread and the newsweak article. The article did not mention Carbonite at all, only one FReeper mentioned that had a BSOD that he blamed on Carbonite. True? Who knows. The Digital Goddess, Kim Komando, recommends it also. She's at www.komando.com

I prefer my own backups, using
Acronis and a couple of extra hard disks. Quicker and easier. Disclaimer - I'm not affiliated with this company.

Every time I hear that commercial I wonder who the idiot was that selected that name. It obviously is a play on “carbon copy.” All of us old folks remember that before Xerox, secretaries had to type a master copy and had up to about eight layers of carbon paper with thin “onion paper” paper sandwiched in between.
The challenge was how hard the typewriter could pound the keys to deposit enough carbon on the lowest copy in order to be legible. It was really crappy but it was all we had.
So I wonder what marketing guru named a computer technology after an old fashion obsolete process.

Also check-out Mozy and HP Upline.
Some people just don't like the idea of storing their personal information online. One of the coolest things I've ever seen for keeping your data backed-up or for adding extra storage is
drobo.

It’s a scam. Don’t do it.
Buy a cheap USB external drive, like Maxtor. It will back up everything, each night.

We have it, but guess we wont know how well it works unless we need it. . . hope we never do, though. When I used to teach network administration, I used to tell my students:
"Nobody ever got fired for bad backups... They always get fired for bad restores!"
there should be a way to restore at least a few files: Do a "redirected restore" (but don't overwrite the originals!) of some files, and then compare them to the originals.
