When I used to teach network administration, I used to tell my students:

"Nobody ever got fired for bad backups... They always get fired for bad restores!"

there should be a way to restore at least a few files: Do a "redirected restore" (but don't overwrite the originals!) of some files, and then compare them to the originals.
