Actually, I don’t think it appropriate for a court reporter to have interacted with a jury in that manner.

Is that even allowed? And what the hell gave this nut job the idea they were tampering with the jury by sharing cookies. I mean if I wanted to rig the jury I could come up with something better than Betty Crocker treats.

We’ve worked with court reporters who bring cookies for all parties to depositions, don’t know about a jury. God, people can’t be nice anymore.

Bless her heart and soul.

Why do you think that was inappropriate? The court reporter had been doing it for years. What does that have to do with the way a trial goes? The court reporter certainly has no say in the outcome of a trial.

I find this a bit scary as one of my daughters is a court reporter for a Federal Judge in Louisiana. (No--she doesn't bake cookies.)

As a Catholic, I know my church would prefer I be against the death penalty. But, everytime I start to lean in that direction, some yahoo goes and does something like this.

I’m sure Georgia will dole out the final punishment for this low-life, and I won’t lose a wink of sleep over it. Good riddance.

This was in Atlanta. There are places not but 25 miles outside of Atlanta (that it is very very common for people to commute into) that still IS Mayberry.

You probably know this already, but the Church’s statements in the anti-death penalty direction are based on human understanding of modern prison care. Historically, the Church has been okay with the death penalty and even called it necessary for the protection of society. It is not something to get excited over, it is a tragedy when it is necessary, but even the new catechism leaves wiggle room for those who have a different understanding of what the modern prison system can and cannot do. The pope’s judgment on these matters is not part of his authority, and he has never said that it was.

I used to be a scopist - that's a person who works on the court reporter's notes to produce the final transcript. I can't remember if at the one trial I did attend whether or not there was any interaction between the jury and court reporter or not.

In our state, court reporters who are employees of the state have "officialships", which mean they do mostly courtroom work, and work in one of the judicial districts.

In this state, official court reporters would be co-employees of the prosecutor. I know I'm sounding like captain obvious here - I'm just thinking out loud.

I guess if the secretary of the defense attorney brought cookies for the jury the prosecutor might "object!".

Why is it inappropriate? The court reporter does nothing but transcribe the proceedings of the trial, nothing she does has any impact on the jury, one way or the other. In many jurisdictions, the court reporter is a contract employee from an outside agency.

Other than asking participants in a trial to speak up, I’m not aware of any influence the court reporter normally has in the courtroom.

However, my aunt who worked as a court reporter for over 50 years often knew the law better than the judges she worked for and would correct them (privately, of course) if they made an error in a ruling or court procedure.
