We’ve worked with court reporters who bring cookies for all parties to depositions, don’t know about a jury. God, people can’t be nice anymore.

Why do you think that was inappropriate? The court reporter had been doing it for years. What does that have to do with the way a trial goes? The court reporter certainly has no say in the outcome of a trial.

I find this a bit scary as one of my daughters is a court reporter for a Federal Judge in Louisiana. (No--she doesn't bake cookies.)

Why is it inappropriate? The court reporter does nothing but transcribe the proceedings of the trial, nothing she does has any impact on the jury, one way or the other. In many jurisdictions, the court reporter is a contract employee from an outside agency.
