Actually, I don’t think it appropriate for a court reporter to have interacted with a jury in that manner.

Is that even allowed? And what the hell gave this nut job the idea they were tampering with the jury by sharing cookies. I mean if I wanted to rig the jury I could come up with something better than Betty Crocker treats.

As a Catholic, I know my church would prefer I be against the death penalty. But, everytime I start to lean in that direction, some yahoo goes and does something like this.

I’m sure Georgia will dole out the final punishment for this low-life, and I won’t lose a wink of sleep over it. Good riddance.

I used to be a scopist - that's a person who works on the court reporter's notes to produce the final transcript. I can't remember if at the one trial I did attend whether or not there was any interaction between the jury and court reporter or not.

In our state, court reporters who are employees of the state have "officialships", which mean they do mostly courtroom work, and work in one of the judicial districts.

In this state, official court reporters would be co-employees of the prosecutor. I know I'm sounding like captain obvious here - I'm just thinking out loud.

I guess if the secretary of the defense attorney brought cookies for the jury the prosecutor might "object!".

Other than asking participants in a trial to speak up, I’m not aware of any influence the court reporter normally has in the courtroom.

However, my aunt who worked as a court reporter for over 50 years often knew the law better than the judges she worked for and would correct them (privately, of course) if they made an error in a ruling or court procedure.
