Enormous cave bears that once inhabited Europe were the first of the mega-mammals to die out, going extinct around 13 millennia earlier than was previously thought, according to a new estimate.
Why'd they go? In part because they were vegetarians.
>
Cave bears were huge, with males growing up to around 2,200 pounds (1,000 kg). The maximum recorded weight of both Kodiak bears and polar bears - the largest bears living today - is 1,760 pounds (800 kg), with averages of around 1,100 pounds (500 kg).
>
Some researchers think humans hunted the mega-mammals to extinction, but researcher Martina Pacher of the University of Vienna and her colleague Anthony J. Stuart of the Natural History Museum, London, found no convincing evidence for this idea regarding cave bears.

Big bear ping.
global warming did them in
No, but I wouldn't want to meet that in a cave either.
If they were vegetarian, then why did they have big fangs and claws? Just sayin’...
Women and minorities hardest hit.
I’ll second that thought, decimom!
From another viewpoint...Defense?? Gives them the ability to climb trees without wearing those special shoes.
What can take down a bear?
Maybe half these species died out becuase of inbreeding?? Or "they killed their own" or only one of a litter of three survived...not enough to sustain a species.
Too many males...infighting...??
Eurosocialism killed their urge to reproduce.
Bears are omnivores like us.
Ping.
If cave bear = short faced bear, they were pure carnivores. Being omnivorous would have been an argument for the bears’ survival, since the leading theory for their extinction was the disappearance of herbivorous mega fauna.
Blame it on Sarah Palin.
Vegetarianism kills. :-)

Cave Bear and SHort faced bear were different species from different lineages. See Arctodus simus for Short Faced or Bulldog Bear. Very different animal and probably a lot more fightening than Cave bears.
