Screenwriter John Michael Hayes, nominated for an Academy Awards for the classic Alfred Hitchcock film "Rear Window" and for "Peyton Place," has died at age 89.
Hayes, who was involved in Dartmouth College's film studies program, died of natural causes Wednesday at a retirement community in Hanover, John Wilson of Rand Wilson Funeral Home said Monday.
Hayes also had collaborated with Hitchcock on "To Catch a Thief," "The Trouble with Harry" and the 1956 remake of Hitchcock's "The Man Who Knew Too Much." His most recent writing credit is the 1998 film "Iron Will."

‘12 Angry Men’ would be better. ‘Rear Window’ is very cinematic.

The Simpsons did a nice parody of “Rear Window” featuring Bart as the Jimmy Stewart charactor.

He took Woolrich’s cool little short novella and transformed it - with Hitch of course - into the “pure cinema” of the voyeurism completely diegetic sound track of Rear Window.

Mine too...it has risen in stature over the years. One of the few films ever to be filmed with completely diegetic sound.
If you appreciate the theme of RW try Krzysztof Kieslowski’s Dekalog no. 6 - another genius filmmaker.

Not nearly as much demand for real screenwriters these days in Hollywood I would guess. All those words just get in the way of special effects. And of course there would be the issue of finding someone who can act, even if a decent screenplay were to fall out of the sky onto a studio executive’s head while he was on the way to ‘do lunch’.

REAR WINDOW is one of the all-time classics, helped greatly by an absolutely stunning Grace Kelly of course.

God bless the man and his family. As for Hitchcock, best driector never to win an academy award. Although it’s an academy award so I guess it doesn’t matter much anyway.

The Oscars are the best of the Industry awards. They have more credbility than the Grammys, Emmys so forth.

What they saved on many set changes they made up for in wardrobe.

In my opinion he only awards that really do matter in the end are box office receipts. These days dvd sales as well. So if winning awards is a big deal to folks, God bless them. I just think something that’s given to you isn’t really all that important.

Most movies that appeal to a large mass audience are junk. If it’s Art it isn’t for everyone and if it’s for everyone it isn’t Art.

I think when an artist signs a contract to work for a movie or put out an album their number one priority is to sell their product. If someone wants to be a true artisit, they don't work for the money, just for the joy of the endeavor. Aren't any real artists in hollywood, never have been. If they claim to be they're just hypocrites.

That definition would exclude Shakespeare, Mozart, Dickens and a raft of others. There's been a ton of great Art that's come out of Hollywood over the last 90 years or so.
