Another student came forward during Wednesdays session of the contract termination hearing for John Freshwater. The student, now a senior at Mount Vernon High School, testified at the end of the days proceedings. Upon questioning by David Millstone, the school boards attorney, the student said he had Freshwater as his eighth-grade science teacher and learned, among other things, about electricity and evolution in Freshwaters class.
Regarding evolution, the student, who asked that his name not be revealed, said Freshwater taught that the earth may only be several thousand years old rather than the billions suggested by the theory of evolution because carbon dating, according to Freshwater, is inaccurate. The student recalled handouts in class that disputed the theory of evolution, as well as a video or tape about the Loch Ness monster. He said his parents were upset about the content of the materials and explained to him that the materials did not reflect the generally accepted scientific views on evolution.
The student also said he felt uncomfortable in Freshwaters classroom. Considering himself to be Jewish at the time, he said, the Christian posters and other religious items in the room contributed to that discomfort, and he relayed those concerns to his parents.
Kelly Hamilton, Freshwaters lawyer, asked the student if he knew the Dennis family. The student said he did not. He also told Hamilton it was his belief his parents took their concerns to the principal at the time. Hamilton asked whether the student passed the science portion of the Ohio Graduation Test and the student said yes, but did not recall if there were any questions related to evolution on the test.

The real issue is not between creationism or evolution; it is about school choice.
If parents want to have their children taught one or the other as science, they should have that option and then see how the marketplace will value such different education standards.
Those of us who disparage creationism being taught as science should also bear in mind that there are forms of secular humanism [e.g marxist social/economic theory] — that are no less based upon faith — that are foisted upon many more children w/o parental review.
Those of us who don’t want creationism or humanism taught to our children should have that option. A government monopoly cannot possibly create a vanilla curriculum that will satisfy everyone.
School choice is the solution, not compromise.
riiiiiiight. I can hear lawsuits percolating about "discrimination" already because little Johnny was taught young earth philosophy as science and hence he is a new charter of victim..
Wrong. The issue here is whether or not the teacher injured the students in his care, and whether or not he was teaching the curriculum required.
Correct!
I agree with you on the “School Choice” matter.
Puplic schools on the first day of a child’s enrollment should have the parents fill out a card with two choices.
1. Teach my child in the sciences as they are accepted by the vast majority of scientists in the fields of chemistry, biology and geology, recognizing and accepting the theories of gravity and evolution.
2. Teach my child young earth creationism as disregard widely accepted scientific theories of the 16th - 21st centuries. Place special emphasis on the idea that man and dinosaur walked on earth at the same time.
But this is not valid from a scirntific standpoint and is only one version of the creation myths. Why can't parents teach Creationism at home and in church?
Ummmm....soooo what happens when parents of kids in his class SUPPORT such a teacher?
I guess only if it jives with the godless liberal NEA agenda could that matter.
Of course.
The student also said he felt uncomfortable in Freshwaters classroom. Considering himself to be Jewish at the time, he said, the Christian posters and other religious items in the room contributed to that discomfort, and he relayed those concerns to his parents.
Jewish, AT THE TIME???? Hmmmmm. And imagine if all us parents began bringing up lawsuits because our kids were "uncomfortable" with all the godless liberal NEA socialism and 'homosexuality is normal' tripe OUR kids are exposed to endlessly? There'd not be enough courtrooms or judges to hear the complaints/cases, that's what!
Busted? I think if anyone is busted that would be you soliton, you misled everyone (again) into reading your tripe. There's ZERO indication of any wrongdoing MUCH LESS I can't find a thing about this teacher branding crosses on student's arms! You really should look into some kind of help!
Parents should have the choice as to if their kids are taught the sciences or young earth creationism in the place of biology, chemistry, physics and geology.
However, if the parents opt for the Creationism Tract for their students they should not complain when their children are not accepted into the major universities.
Just wondering how leftist/atheist/etc would feel if
atheists, secular humanists, and pagans felt they had no choice but to homeschool
because of the pervasive Christian worldview infesting the public school system.

Interesting, because it was gracious Christians that allowed these festering NEA god-hating loons to profilgate to this point in the first place.
Had this been an Islamic nation, these kids really WOULD have been branded, but it wouldn’t have abeen a cross and everyone knows it!
Major universitites that employ people like Ward Churchhill to teach political science?
Riiiiiiiiight.
Good point!
Churchill did not teach a science.
So yes, the choice should be yours. Have the schools teach science as it is accepted by 99% of the scientific community or have the schools teach Creationism as it is exhibited at the Creation Museum and on the Flintstones.
I notice that you give no say to the PARENTS.
See Post 6 where I state that parents should be able to decide if their kids are taught Creationism in school.
Churchhill taught political science, it’s not WHAT he taught was the point, it’s the fact that godless liberals are incapable of objectivity was the point. (OF course it helps not te BE one to be able to see this!)
And it’s not 99% of scientists, nowhere even close in fact.
I notice that you give no say to the PARENTS.
well, of course not, not unless you’re willing to run off and pay for your school AND the failed godless liberal NEA socialization centers, which brings me to the sheer irony of trumandogz tagline!

LOL. My guess is that they'd bitch and moan exactly as the those of the Christian worldview are doing. And would probably home/private school the kids in like numbers.
Of course I saw it...but I prefer a better worded option.
1. Stick with the unobjective typical NEA godless failed liberal agenda that supposes science is only science as defined by them; devoid of God and therby an intelligent designer; with special emphasis on what closed minded liberal group-think undoubtedly yields such as global warming.
OR
2. Allow students and teachers together to freely explore science wherever the science itself leads, free of any political agenda and ideology.
