The Stink in Farts Controls Blood Pressure

A smelly rotten-egg gas in farts controls blood pressure in mice, a new study finds.
The unpleasant aroma of the gas, called hydrogen sulfide (H2S), can be a little too familiar, as it is expelled by bacteria living in the human colon and eventually makes its way, well, out.
The new research found that cells lining mice's blood vessels naturally make the gas and this action can help keep the rodents' blood pressure low by relaxing the blood vessels to prevent hypertension (high blood pressure). This gas is "no doubt" produced in cells lining human blood vessels too, the researchers said.
"Now that we know hydrogen sulfide's role in regulating blood pressure, it may be possible to design drug therapies that enhance its formation as an alternative to the current methods of treatment for hypertension," said Johns Hopkins neuroscientist Solomon H. Snyder, M.D., a co-author of the study detailed in the Oct. 24th issue of the journal Science.
The research was supported by grants from the U.S. Public Health Service and the Canadian Institutes of Health Research as well as a Research Scientist Award.

Our first Thanksgiving in Atlanta was in 1968. My grandparents came for Thanksgiving. After dinner we went to watch the lighting of the tree on top of Rich’s.
Walking back to the car afterwards, my brother, sisters & myself (as well as my parents) were wondering what that God awful smell was. We were crossing a bridge over RR Tracks and my Grandma almost made it without being ID’d. But she giggled.
“That’s not the train, that’s Grandma!”
Prolly what Harry said.
I can only imagine how beneficial regular ingestion of pickled eggs, cheap beer, and bar chili that’s been simmering all week is for my ticker. If it can remove varnish from the furniture surely it ought to be able to clear out the old arteries.
My dogs must be in really good health!
My first Christmas with the Mrs and her family, we went from San Ramon to Burlingame, CA across the San Mateo Bridge. On the way back from Burlingame, my Mrs, her sister and I were driving over the bridge when...
“PHEW!!!!!!!!!! WHAT’S THAT SMELL??????”
My SIL swore up and down that it was the smell of the Bay...except we had closed windows, and she was the one who ID’d the smell...
To this day, we don’t let her forget about her “gaseous” incident.
No wonder my blood pressure is dangerously low.
Suuuuuure.... blame it on the dog!
I’m pretty sure this headline is the next-to-last sign of the Apocalypse.
LOL!
I am 54 now. My grandmother passed away several years ago at 96. That Thanksgiving was almost 40 years ago.
We never let Grandma forget it and still laugh about it as if it happened yesterday.
